    This section first tests students' grasp of the key vocabulary and core grammatical structure of the unit. Activity 1 is word discrimination and practice. The meanings of each group of words in the eight sentences are very similar. The activity examines their nuances and asks students to make correct judgments based on the context. This unit through such exercises to cultivate students' awareness of accurate words, let them learn to use appropriate words accurately express meaning, which is the only way to improve the quality of English learning. Activity 2 ask students to use the verb -ing form flexibly in the text. Nancy, a girl, broke her ankle while riding her bicycle home at night.

    【辨析】

    fabric n. 料子,面料.尤指用于制作服装、窗帘、家具覆盖物等的料子。

    cloth n. 布,布料.普通用词,指用于制作服装的布料。

    This fabric is colour fast and wrinkle resistant.

    happiness n. 幸福; 高兴; 恰当; 合适

    welfare n. 福利; 幸福; 繁荣; 安宁

    【辨析】

    grab v. 抓住,攫取。指突然抓住某人或某物,强调动作粗野,作此义解时常可与snatch 换用;有时也指紧紧抓住某人或某物。

    grasp v. 抓牢,抓紧。指紧紧地、牢牢地抓住某物。

    The thief suddenly grabbed/snatched the purse from her and escaped.小偷猛地一把夺过她的钱包逃跑了。

    He grasped the handle firmly.他紧紧地抓着手柄。

    4.这条裤子太松了--我很难系住它们。

    【辨析】loose/lose拼写相似但意思完全不同。

    loose  adj. 未固定牢的,松动的;(衣服)宽松的

    lose v. 丢失;失去(某一特性、特点、态度或信念)

    If a tooth feels very loose, your dentist may recommend that it's taken out.如果有颗牙齿非常松动,你的牙医可能会建议拔掉它。

    He had tasted freedom only to lose it again. 他刚尝到了自由的甜头,却又失去了。

    5.盗窃案发生后,警察被召来调查此事。

    【辨析】accident/incident 拼写相似,意思接近。

    accident一般用于出车祸和事故等非主观性、突发性的事件,不可用于政治事件!

    incident指日常突发的小事件,也可用于政治事件中,国际上的争端用incident

    她上个星期卷入了一场严重的车祸。

    I think you can weave a story around this incident.

    ray n. 光线;(热或其他能量的)射线

         Is Your School Safe?

    Your school can be a dangerous place, but by making it safer you can prevent accidents.

    The Playground

    Make sure that there are no small rocks, tree branches, or glass on the playground.

    Don't climb on playground equipment. Use playground equipment only as it was designed to be used.

    No running except in areas set aside for it.

    The Gym and Sports Field

    Always wear the proper sports clothes and equipment when taking part in sports activities or exercises.

    Follow the directions of the coaches and sports teachers.

    When running, jumping, throwing a ball, etc., pay close attention to the people around you, or else you can hurt them.

      The Bathrooms

    Be careful if the floors are wet.

    Do not use electrical appliances, such as hairdryers, in the school bathrooms.

    If the plumbing or electricity does not work or is not working properly, report it to the school staff.

    The Hallways and Classrooms

    No running or pushing.

     Be very careful if the floors are wet after rain or snow, especially on stairways.

    Do not block doorways with box or furniture, and do not use the hallways for storage.

    The Science Labs

    Wear safety gear as needed.

    Follow the instructions of the teachers and staff.

    Put equipment away when you are done with it.

    The Parking Lot and Street

    Do not use the parking lot or street in front of the school as a place to gather or hang out.

    Watch carefully for cars, bicycles, and pedestrians when leaving or entering the school.

               How to offer first aid safely?

       When in urgent situations, first check the scene to make sure of your own safety. Don't move the victim unless you must do so. Then manage to call for the ambulance. Before help comes, cover the victim with a carpet and ease his or her fear and anxiety.

       In many cases, we can use a piece of cloth to cover minor cuts or burns. However, if the person is bleeding, stop bleeding by pressing a piece of clean cloth on the cut tightly. But remember, it is always vital to protect yourself from danger when providing first aid. Avoid direct contact with blood, and wash your hands with soap and water immediately after providing first aid care.
