Several Chinese companies are temporarily hiring-or ''sharing"-employees from businesses that haven't resumed operations or are only partially operating due to concerns over the novel coronavirus epidemic . The so-called shared employees, known as gongxiangyuangong in Chinese, are being hired by supermarkets, e-commerce platforms' retail stores, and other companies or factories to ease the lack of workforce.

According to domestic media outlet National Business Daily, more than 3,000 new employees had joined Hema by Feb 19, while over 4,000 people had signed up for the  "talent-sharing" plan under Suning by Feb 21. The American supermarket chain Walmart has also joined in the trend, hiring more than 3,000 temporary workers from other sectors to work at its branches in cities like Beijing, Fuzhou, and Shenzhen.

Bike-sharing company Hello bike has opened 8,000 positions nationwide for bicycle maintenance, according to Xinhua News Agency. In Hefei, capital of the eastern Anhui province, Hello bike is seeking 300 temporary workers, while 40 employees from a local hotel have started working at an industrial park on one-month contracts.

Yao Junchang, a lawyer with Beijing Weiheng Law Firm, told Workers' Daily that companies hiring temporary workers should guarantee detailed provisions (规定,条款) in their agreements, including the time of employment, salary and policy for work-related injury compensation.

"At the same time, the companies lending the employees should sign a complete secondment arrangement, pay employees in full, and pay social security on time," he said. "Employees should pay more attention to safety measures and require a tripartite (三方) agreement or labor agreement to be signed during the temporary employment period and keep records as evidence."

    4. During the novel coronavirus epidemic, what’s the reason for sharing employees?

    A. These employees are free.             B. These employees are more capable.

    C. These employees are badly in need.     D. These employees hope to earn more money.

    5. How does paragraph 2 develop?

Something’s happening at the lowest point on our planet, some 1,388 feet below sea level. The Dead Sea, a salt lake close to Israel, Jordan and the West Bank, is shrinking at an alarming rate-about 3.3 feet per year, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East.

"It’s not just like one country is punishing the Dead Sea; it’s more like the whole region," said photographer Moritz Küstner, who visited the area in February to work on his series "The Dying Dead Sea".

The Dead Sea needs water from the other natural sources surrounding it, such as the Jordan River basin. But around the 1960s, the courses of some water sources it relied upon were diverted. Israel, for instance, built a pipeline during that time so it could supply water throughout the country.

Mineral extraction(提取) industries are another main reason why the water levels are declining, experts say. The Dead Sea's minerals have been popular for their medical power and can often be found in cosmetics(化妆品) and other consumer products.

And then, of course, there’s the Middle East’s hot, dry climate, which makes it difficult for the lake to refill itself. Last year, Israel and Jordan signed a $900 million deal in an effort to stabilize the Dead Sea’s water levels. It involves building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea which would be able to not only supply water to Israel and Jordan but also to pump much needed water-some 300 million cubic meters annually-into the Dead Sea.

"This is the most important and significant agreement since the peace treaty with Jordan (in 1994)," said Silvan Shalom, Israel’s energy and water resources minister at the time. Whether the canal-estimated to take three years to complete-will work out positively and as planned remains to be seen.

For now, Kustner shows us that the Dead Sea remains very much a place of interest, with people from all over the world going there to swim in its salty waters.

    8. How many reasons for the Dead Sea’s shrinking does the author mention in the passage?

    A. One.     B. Two.     C. Three.     D. Four.

    9. What does the underlined word "diverted" in paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Switch.     B. Improve.     C. Accomplish.      D. Repair.

    10. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. The Dead Sea is drying out causing water shortage to humans.

    B. Kustner visited the Dead Sea to shoot TV series about people’s life.

    C. The Dead Sea’s minerals have been used in some products.

    D. The Dead Sea’s water levels have been stabilized by building a canal.

    11. What is the passage mainly about?

    A. How the Dead Sea’s water levels' decline influences human beings.

    B. How important the Dead Sea is in Israel, Jordan and the West Bank.

    C. What we should do to save the Dead Sea from being destroyed.

    D. Why the Dead Sea is dying and the measure taken to save it.

    D

There is something to be said for being a generalist, even if you are a specialist. Knowing a little about a lot of things that interest you can add to the richness of a whole, well-lived life.

Society pushes us to specialize, to become experts. This requires commitment to a particular occupation, branch of study or research. The drawback to being specialists is we often come to know more and more about less and less. There is a great deal of pressure to master one's field. You may pursue training, degrees, or increasing levels of responsibility at work. Then you discover the pressure of having to keep up.

Some people seem willing to work around the clock in their narrow specialty. But such commitment can also weaken a sense of freedom. These specialists could work at the office until ten each night, then look back and realize they would have loved to have gone home and enjoyed the sweetness of their family and friends, or traveled to exciting places, meeting interesting people. Mastering one thing to the exclusion of others can hold back your true spirit.

Generalists, on the other hand, know a lot about a wide range of subjects and view the whole with all its connections. They are people of ability, talent, and enthusiasm who can bring their broad perspective(视角) into specific fields of expertise(专长) . The doctor who is also a poet and philosopher is a superior doctor, one who can give so much more to his patients than just good medical skills.

Things are connected. Let your expertise in one field fuel your passions in all related areas. Some of your interests may not appear to be connected but, once you explore their depths, you discover that they are. My editor Toni, who is also a writer, has edited several history books. She has decided to study Chinese history. Fascinated by the structural beauty of the Forbidden City as a painter, she is equally interested to learn more about Chinese philosophy. "I don't know where it will lead, but I'm excited I'm on this pursuit.

These expansions into new worlds help us by giving us new perspectives. We begin to see the interconnectedness of one thing to another in all aspects of our life, of ourselves and the universe. Develop broad, general knowledge and experience. The universe is all yours to explore and enjoy.

    12. To become a specialist, one may have to           .

    A. avoid responsibilities at work       B. narrow his range of knowledge

    C. know more about the society        D. broaden his perspective on life

    13. According to the author, a superior doctor is one who           .

    A. is fully aware of his talent and ability         B. is a pure specialist in medicine

    C. brings knowledge of other fields to work       D. should love poetry and philosophy

    14. What does the author intend to show with the example of Toni?

    A. Seemingly unrelated interests are in a way connected.

    B. Passion alone does not ensure a person's success.

    C. In-depth exploration makes discoveries possible.

    D. Everyone has a chance to succeed in their pursuit.

    15. What could be the best title for the passage?

    A. Specialist or Generalist: Hard to Decide      B. Turn a Generalist into a Specialist

    C. Ways to Become a Generalist              D. Be More a Generalist Than a Specialist

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

We don't meet people by accident.  16  Some will help you grow, some will hurt you, some will inspire you to do better. At the same time, you are playing some role in their lives as well. Know that paths cross for a reason and treat people with significance.

17  There is no better joy than helping people see a vision for themselves, seeing them go to levels higher than they ever would have imagined on their own. But that doesn't mean you have to fix them or enable them;   18   Offer them support and motivation as they find their own way and show you what they're capable of. All you have to do is believe in them.

Never look down on someone unless you are helping them up. We like to think of life as a meritocracy(精英统治), so it's easy to look down on someone who isn't as successful or accomplished or well-educated as you are. But you have no idea how far that person has already climbed or where they will end up. Time could easily reverse(颠倒) your positions,   19

Appreciate those who have supported you, forgive those who have hurt you, help those who need you.  20  Treat all people-including yourself-with love and compassion, and you can't go wrong. Treat people the way you want to be treated and life will instantly get better.

    A. so be sure you treat everyone with dignity.

    B. therefore, cherish every person you meet.

    C. Never fix them when they make mistakes.

    D. Don't tell them how to get there but show the way.

    E. instead, guide them to the source of their own.

    F. Business is complicated, life is complex and leadership is difficult.

    G. Every person you meet will have a role in your life, be it big or small.
