    .阅读理解

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles” of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; in Japan, people use landmarks(地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travellers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.

It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

    C.so as to be polite

    D.for fun

A.It’s important for travellers to understand cultural differences.

B.It’s useful for travellers to know how to ask the way properly.

C.People have similar understandings of politeness.

D.New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.

    .完形填空

Sometimes people around you can change your values. My elder brother Steve, in the 1 of my father who died when I was six, gave me important lessons in 2 that helped me grow into an adult. Once when I returned 3 from a baseball game, it was Steve that took the time to ask me what had happened. When I explained that my baseball had 4 through Mrs Holt’s basement window, breaking the glass, Steve encouraged me to 5 to her. After all, I should have played in the park and not in the path between buildings. Although my 6 trembled as I stood explaining, I offered to 7 the window if she would return my ball. I also learned that personal property is a sacred thing.

After I found a shiny silver pen in my fifth-grade classroom, I wanted to keep it, but Steve explained that it might be important to someone else 8 the fact that it had little value. He reminded me of how much I’d hate to lose to someone else the small dog my father 9 from a piece of cheap wood. I returned the pen to my teacher, and still remembered the smell of her perfume(香水) as she patted me on my shoulder. Yet of all the 10 Steve gave me, his respect for life is the most 11 in my mind.

At twelve I killed a sparrow with a gun. Excited with my 12 , I screamed to Steve to take a look. I shall never forget the way he stood for a long moment and 13 the bird on the ground. Then in a dead, quiet voice, he asked, “Did it hurt you first, Mark?” I didn’t know what to answer. He continued with his eyes 14 , “The only time you should even think of hurting a living thing is whether it hurts you first. And then you think a long, long time.” I really felt terrible then, but that moment 15 as the most important lesson my brother has taught me.
