The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) meets each year to choose the latest additions to its World Heritage (遗产) list. The following are some of the recent additions.
Churches of the Pskov School of Architecture (Russia)
The structures, many of which are churches, were all designed by the Pskov School of Architecture. It was a leading school of building design in the country, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries. Some elements common to Pskov architecture date back to the 11th century.
        Babylon (Iraq)
The ancient city of Babylon is gaining World Heritage Site status. The city was once a main tourist site before Iraq suffered several wars. The 4,300-year-old city is where dynasties have risen and fallen since the earliest days of settled human civilization. UNESCO says the site “offers a look into one of the most influential empires of the ancient world”.
        Writing-on-Stone (Canada)
Canada's Writing-on-Stone monument has a large number of protected rock paintings and rock carvings. Some of them are 2,000 years old. The markings were left by Blackfoot Native Americans, who lived in parts of Western Canada and the far northern United States. The land that makes up Writing-on-Stone is filled with rock posts that have been formed into “spectacular shapes” by erosion (侵蚀).
        Paraty and Ilha Grande (Brazil)
The historic coastal town of Paraty and the island Ilha Grande are already popular places for visitors toBrazil's Rio de Janeiro state. Paraty was the final stop along the Gold Route, along which gold was shipped to Europe in the 1600s. The area is also home to a huge number of animals, some of which are in danger now.

Can you imagine having flexible computer screens and mobile phones which change shape to tell you when you have a new message? It sounds like a crazy idea, but in fact it's already been invented!
A model called MorePhone has been created by scientists at the Human Media Lab in Canada. It's based on flexible plastic technology developed in Cambridge in the UK by an organization called Plastic Logic.
The flexible screens can be any size, and are easy to read in direct sunlight. They can be black and white or colorful and are very thin and light. Rachel Lichten, who works at Plastic Logic, says you can even jump on them. Besides, it wastes very little electric energy, so there is no need for large batteries, and this makes them easier to carry around. Lichten says this technology could be used for heart monitoring, smart watches, second screens for mobile phones, but there are many tests to be done before it is used for medical devices planted in human body.
Plastic Logic has spent 13 years developing this new technology. Their challenge now is to think of new ways to use it. Lichten says it is always the same with new technologies. She says “bringing new technology to the market is a challenge, especially because it is revolutionary. However, for the next generation of products, you have to know what the next generation of products will be.” Working with mobile phones or laptops that can roll up like a piece of paper could turn hardware into flexible one.
1.How will the phone inform you of a new message in the future?
A.By ringing you. B.By playing music.
C.By changing shape. D.By displaying picture.
    2. What is the advantage of the flexible screen?
    A.It's portable. B.It's fragile.
C.It has a single color. D.It has no battery.
3.Which device may probably use the flexible screen?
    A.Electric toys.
    B.Smart watches.
    C.Plastic buttons.
    D.Mobile phones' first screens.
4.What is the challenge for the Plastic Logic now?
    A.The revolutionary concept.
B.Spending many years on the technology.
C.Uncertainty of what the products will be like.
D.Promoting the new technology in the market.
Judy Wright and her husband decided to move closer to their son, Chris, who lived in Georgia. About a month after the move, Judy fell ill, suffering from her ongoing (不间断的) battle against Parkinson’ disease.
Her condition worsened rapidly and she required medical care at home. The family hired a nursing aid who canceled at the last minute. Instead, a woman named TunDe Hector showed up in her place.
One day, TunDe shared a story with Judy and her family. She remembered a particularly difficult day in 2014, when a stranger had helped her with a kind gesture. She had run out of gas, and with only $5 in her pocket, was walking to a gas station. A man saw her walking and turned his car around. He paid for her gas and gave her all the cash left in his wallet. Upon hearing the story, Judy’s son, Chris, took off his hat and said, “That was me!” He was the stranger that had helped TunDe on that difficult day.
During the care of Judy, the Wright family learned about TunDe’s family and her own dream. The nursing aid, TunDe hoped that one day she could become an OB-GYN nurse. Her tuition was past due (逾期)and she had a family to care for, but she was determined to achieve that goal for herself and her family.
Judy died on July 9,2017.Instead of flowers, her family asked mourners (悼念者) to donate to TunDe’s education, to assist her in paying for her nursing school. In less than a week, they raised more than $8,000 and presented her with the surprise check.
1.Why did Judy’s family choose TunDe in the end?
A.To help her with a kind gesture.
B.To look after Judy in the hospital.
    C.To replace another nursing aid.

D.They helped her realize her dream.
4.What does the whole story mainly tell us?
    A.Kindness comes full circle.
    B.Constant dropping wears stone.
    C.The truth never fears investigation.
    D.Actions speak louder than words.

It was only a dollar. Dylan noticed it on the floor as he sat at the back of his English class at John F. Kennedy High School, in March. He picked it up and brought it to his English teacher—Katie Mattison.
Mattison was a little surprised he’d turned the dollar in, knowing a lot of people would have just kept it. She suggested that Belscher tape it to the whiteboard at the front of the classroom, where she always puts lost things.Maybe the dollar was lunch money or bus fare for the student who dropped it.
Hunter Rose, then a senior, spotted the dollar on the whiteboard. After class, he asked Mattison why it was there. She was still waiting for the original owner to claim it, so she replied, “I don’t know.” Rose took the tape from Mattison’s desk and taped a second dollar to the board.
The sight of the two dollar bills, side by side, triggered something in Mattison’s students. They started asking about the purpose of the money, to which Mattison always gave the same answer: She didn’t know. At that point, it was absolutely true.
More students, curious, taped up single dollar bills. The effort snowballed. Even with no specific purpose, many students wanted to be part of whatever this was. The students, among themselves, decided Mattison had some unspoken goal. They figured bigger donations could only help them get there faster. The amount continued to grow over several weeks, until it reached $175.76.As for the original dollar, the person who lost it never came looking.
That left Mattison to decide upon the best resolution. She kept thinking about her brother-in-law, Jack Hains, a guy she describes as a wonderful human being who had died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rare and devastating neurological disease. She asked the teens whether they minded if she donated the dollars to the ALS Therapy Development Institute.
Their answer was to tape enough money to the whiteboard over the next few days to push the amount to $321.06.Mattison,choking back tears as she recalls the moment, says she carefully peeled the cash off the board and made the donation just before the beginning of May, which is National ALS Awareness Month.
1.The first dollar bill belongs to _____.
    A.Dylan
    B.Mattison
    C.Hunter Rose

3.More and more students taped up single dollar bills to the whiteboard because _____.
A.they were moved by Dylan and Hunter
B.their teacher called on them to do so
C.they wanted to help with Mattison's secret plan
D.they wanted to help the poor guy who lost the bill

When everything goes wrong, always look at what you have, instead of what you have lost. Because it’s not what the world takes away from you that counts; it’s what you do with what you have left. ① _____
        Pain is part of growing.
Sometimes life closes doors because it’s time to move forward. ②_____ When times are tough, remind yourself that no pain comes without a purpose. Remember that there are two kinds of pain: pain that hurts you and pain that changes you. When you roll with life, instead of resisting it, both kinds help you grow.
        ③_____
Every time you get hurt, you heal. After darkness there is always light—you are reminded of this every morning, but still you often forget, and instead choose to believe that the night will last forever. It won’t. Nothing lasts forever.
        Complaining changes nothing.
④_____ It’s always better to attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed. It’s not over if you’ve lost; it’s over when you do nothing but complain about it. If you believe in something, keep trying. Don’t let the shadows of the past darken the doorstep of your future.
The best thing you can do is keep going.
Don’t be afraid to get back up—to try again, to love again, to live again, and to dream again. Don’t let a hard lesson harden your heart. Life’s best lessons are often learned at the worst times and from the worst mistakes. There will be times when it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong. ⑤_____
    A.Everything in life is temporary.
B.And even if you fall short, keep going.
C.Your scars are symbols of your strength.
D.Those who complain the most, accomplish the least.
E.Here are a few tips to inspire you when you need it most.
F.That’s a good thing because we often won’t move unless life forces us to.
G.When you feel like quitting, remember that sometimes things can be right eventually.

Jack, a clerk at the local bank, was wandering alone on the street. It was a cold, silent winter night. His mind was on his wife Linda, who had been in a car accident two months ago and was now lying in the hospital bed, waiting for more money for her operation. Jack had sold everything he had, and he had tried his best to borrow money from all the people and banks he could. But the real world is cruel.
A large amount of money was still needed. To Jack, it would mean a great deal of suffering to see his wife die without any help. “I have only one option left,” Jack said to himself. Then he went to the bank, his workplace, again. For several days, he observed the bank and planned a theft.
The next day, he went to work as usual. Everything seemed normal: he joked with his workmates and helped his clients as he always did. But no one noticed that he had brought a bigger suitcase to work, instead of the small one he always carried. At 5:00 pm, the bank closed, and the clerks and the guards had all gone home. However, at that moment, Jack was in the bathroom, and the guards didn’t notice him, of course. When the noises coming from the street were replaced by silence and everything turned dark, Jack came out from the bathroom. He first cut the lines of the alarms and monitors with tools from his new suitcase.
He was all too familiar with the equipment since he had been working there for 8 years and had been studying the security system for the past 30 days. Using a special key and some other tools, he then easily opened the doors of the safes. The bank’s security system wasn’t very good, which allowed Jack to take a lot of money. Several minutes later, Jack left the bank with a heavy bag filled with money.
    Paragraph 1:
After Jack had been gone from the bank for a while, the alarms began to ring. ____________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
But the most unlucky man was the manager of the bank, an old man. ___________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

答案:compared; that; are called; were; quantities; causing; completely; the; to; warmer
强调句结构为“It's +被强调部分+that从句.”,句中强调主语the burning of fossil fuels。故填that。
    ③考查语态。这个过程(产生)的副产品被称为“温室”气体。句中主语some byproducts of this process与动词call 之间为被动关系,应用被动语态。故填are called。

短语on the other hand意为“另一方面”。故填the。
    ⑨考查固定搭配。be opposed to是常用搭配,意为“反对”。
    ⑩考查形容词比较级。但有一点是肯定的,即使我们开始减少“温室”气体的量,地球将继续变得更暖。get为连系动词,后跟形容词比较级时意为“变得更……”。故填warmer。

    答案:
    Dear editor,
Recently I've found a donation box in our school, which the students come to when they have old clothes, bags, newspapers and books to donate.
This box, I think, is of great significance. So enthusiastic are the students that they are actively involved in it. Take me for example, I outgrow my clothes so rapidly. I've got no idea about how to deal with the clothes which are really new and still in good condition. However, with this donation box, I can help those people in need.
In a word, I do think it is a good idea and it can light up our life and make the world a better place to live in.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    答案:
    Paragraph 1:
After Jack had been gone from the bank for a while, the alarms began to ring. The police arrived at the bank very quickly, only to find no one there. The next day was a really special day for the town, which was filled with newspaper and TV reporters covering the strange theft. The clerks at the bank were busy discussing the case, of course, including Jack. The police could only promise to catch the thieves as soon as possible, even though no clues had been found yet.
    Paragraph 2:
But the most unlucky man was the manager of the bank, an old man. He seemed to be the only person to blame and was removed from his position. At last, with enough money for her operation, Jack’s wife was saved. However, Jack felt guilty about the manager of the bank. He could not forget what he had done to the old man. His guilt deepened as time went by. Finally, he turned himself in to the police and accepted his punishment.
