I looked at my father's sugar-crusted hands, his shocked eyes, and I knew that I was breaking his heart. It was the worst time to say anything, to just blurt it out like this while we were cooking and preparing the house for guests—especially because my father was busy doing the one thing that I was about to tell them that I would never do. But I couldn't hold it in any longer, and I needed to say something now, otherwise I would just be delaying the inevitable and probably have an anxiety-caused breakdown in the meantime.

We were standing in the kitchen while my family was scattered around the living room tidying up, pretending not to listen and clearly listening: Soft footsteps approached, and my mother was now with us in the kitchen. “What is this, Beta?” she said. She was shocked; I was ashamed.

“I'm sorry,” I said miserably. “But I can't do it. I'm not good at cooking. Everything I touch comes out wrongand tastes terrible. Even the simple ladoos I try to make fall apart.

“You have to practice, Beta, my father exploded. “You don't practice enough! All you do is sit in your room, and write in that journal...”

“I want to be a writer.” I cried out what had been reverberating in my mind for the last three years.

My parents were astonished. “The sweet store is your duty, Beta. Your duty to your family. We're counting on you because you are our daughter.” my father spoke as though this was all that needed to be said.

    My heart sank.

My father gave me a hard look. “When your grandfather comes over for dinner,” he warned, “don't say a word to him.”

“He's still recovering from his surgery,” my mother added severely.

My father turned back to shaping the ladoos. “We'll discuss this later,” he said abruptly, and the conversation was over.

When the rest of the family came over that evening, I found myself sitting next to my grandfather. Everyone laughed and joked except me. When there was a period of quietness in the conversation, my grandfather said, “Beta, come with me to the kitchen.”

Located in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, Edgewood Elementary School has set up a crisis response system that goes smoothly there. It has direct connection with agencies such as hospitals, the police station. Many teachers there have given their personal phone numbers to students and families in case they need extra help as well. There's no doubt that the primary school is famous for its quickness in emergency response.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia Smith began what was only her second year as a first grade teacher in a virtual classroom at the school. One September afternoon a few weeks into the school, she received a call from Mary White, who was having technical difficulties with her granddaughter's tools for online learning.

Julia immediately knew something was wrong with Mary. The two women had spoken numerous times before, but Julia had never heard the grandmother sound quite like this. Her words were in such disorder that Julia could barely understand her, though she was able to make out that Mary had fallen four times that day. "Was she going to have a stroke(中风)?" Julia wondered.

Julia called her principal, Charlie Green, telling him her concern. From Julia, Green knew that Mary's two grandchildren, aged four and six, were probably home alone with her---the kids' parents were killed in a traffic accident several years ago and now she was their primary guardian. Green assured her that he would call and check on Mary himself. Yet Julia still felt worried, so she grabbed the handbag, rushing out.

Just like Julia, Green could barely understand Mary, but he was able to make out the word "Kids". It called up his memories of his own father, who had suffered a stroke. Green still vividly remembered the symptoms---sudden headaches, confusion, different vision, difficulty speaking and unexpected falls---that his father had experienced. "Mary must be having a stroke," Green thought to himself.

An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick, and they had no money left. They were moving to a smaller house because they could not afford to stay in the present house after paying the doctor's bills. Only a very costly surgery could save him now and there was no one to loan them the money.

When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother with whispered desperation, 'Only a miracle can save him now' , the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her piggy bank from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully.

Clutching the precious piggy bank tightly, she came to the local drugstore. She took a quarter from her bank and placed it on the glass counter.

“And what do you want?” asked the pharmacist. “It's for my little brother,” the girl answered back. “He's really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle. ”

“His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?”

“We don't sell miracles here, child. I'm sorry,” the pharmacist said, smiling sadly at the little girl.

“Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn't enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.”

In the shop, a well-dressed customer, asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?"That well-dressed man was Dr Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neuro - surgery.

“I don't know," she replied with her eyes welling up, "he's really sick and my daddy can't pay for an operation, so I have brought my savings.”

“How much do you have?" asked the man. “One dollar and eleven cents, but I can try and get some more," she answered bitterly.

“Well, what a coincidence,"smiled the man.“A dollar and eleven cents-the exact price of a miracle for your little brother.”

I was in my room, slowly getting ready to head to the community theater with the rest of my family. I wasn't in the mood for being onstage.

“Kate, come here,” my mom called from down the hall.

I found my mom outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. Henry, my new stepbrother, was nearby, working on a complicated string knot, as usual.

My mother gave the book a shake. “Henry's book is in the bathtub. Did you put it there?”

“Not on purpose,” I said. “It was already on the edge, and it happened to fall in when I stepped out of the tub.”

My mother glared at me, something she never did before I had a stepfamily. “You could have picked it up,” she said. "That would have been the kind thing to do.”

As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside. "This is our corner of the world now, Kate," she said. "Let's try to make it a good one.”

The community theater was busy when we got there. Theater used to be what my mom and I did together—one play a year for our special thing. With Henry involved, it didn't seem so special anymore.

Henry's dad, who had arrived earlier to help set up, was already in costume. “Dear children,” he called in a theatrical voice, “Come to Father.” I thought he was a nice guy even before he and my mother started dating. Unfortunately, I now had a stepbrother to deal with.

Soon, it was curtain time. I peeked out at the audience and noticed that the darkened theatre was full. My heart beat faster. I forgot my annoyance at Henry as the lead actress sang, “The hills are alive with the sound of music!” Nothing compared to show nights.

Before long, it was my turn. I went onstage, song book in hand. As we kids lined up before Henry's dad, who was playing the part of our father, I realized how poorly I'd tied the string on my skirt which was over leggings. I should have asked my mom for help.

“I hate them! I really hate them!" shouted Tom angrily.

Tara and Mike looked at their friend. They couldn't believe it.He was really furious!

“Andy is OK now," said Tara, trying to calm Tom down.

The three friends were in the park after school. They were talking about their friend Andy.Andy was the youngest in the class and today two bullies (欺凌者) pushed him against a locker and hurt him.Andy fell and cut his head. Now he has five stitches (缝针) in his forehead.

Their school was a nice, peaceful place until Brian and Mark arrived a few months ago.Brian and Mark were bullies and their favorite trouble spot was the locker room. That morning their victim was Andy, maybe because he was smaller and younger than everyone else in the class.

The teachers knew that there were some bullying incidents at school. But most kids didn't want to report the incidents. So bullying at their school wasn't an“official" problem.

During the incident Andy cut his head.As soon as the bullies saw the blood, they disappeared.Andy called for help and a teacher came and took him straight to the hospital. But Andy didn't tell the teacher about the bullies. When the head teacher asked him, he simply said,“I fell and cut my head"

“Brian and Mark must pay!" repeated Tom.He was walking around in circles and hitting the palm of his left hand with his right fist.“Can't you see? You are behaving like the bullies," Tara said sadly.Mike looked at Tom, too, and he knew Tom very well, Tom hated violence.“bullying is not cool,”said Mike, waving his arms like he was dancing.“We have to tell someone about this," said Tara.“Andy was hurt."

But right now, Tom had other things on his mind.He not only hated the bullies but also hated violence. He was in a dilemmahe wanted to fight Brian and Mark but he didn't want to fight with the bullies by violence.

    .读后续写

Five years ago, I had a nine-to-five job, and I usually commuted to work by bus. Those long tiring hours of travelling were always annoying. But one day, it was healing.

It was a warm March evening, and I'd just taken a seat on the bus that would take me home. I sat in the third row by the window, on the driver's side. It was nearly 6:00 p.m., but the bus was not yet full and the driver gave no indication that he intended to get the bus on the road anytime soon.

A middle-aged woman look a seat opposite me. She was crying. Not speaking to anyone in particular, she tearfully told her story.

She had come to the city to visit her daughter. On the way to the terminal, a thief had snatched one of her bags. It had contained half of the money she'd brought with her. The other half was rolled in a handkerchief and hidden under her blouse, so she fortunately still had some money left.

The bus conductor, driver, and other passengers listened to her tale. After a few minutes, she stopped crying, removed some cheese bread from her bag, and began to eat, worry still sweeping over her.

An old man in ragged and shabby clothes got on the bus. He sat in the seal directly in front of the woman.

After a few minutes, all seats were taken. The driver got behind the wheel and started the engine. The bus conductor collected tickets and began asking us where we were getting off. When by came to the old man's seal, he became suspicious and asked the old man whether he had any money .The old man admitted that he did not. He explained that he had spent all his money this morning when he'd accidentally got on the wrong bus and now he was trying to go home.

    参考答案:

1Once we reached the kitchen, he asked me what was wrong. I wanted to tell him everything, but didn’t want to disappoint him the way I had disappointed my parents. Furthermore, my mother’s comment about his surgery was on my mind. So I shook my head. At that moment, my father came into the kitchen. My grandfather looked at him, concerned, and then asked the same question. My father froze momentarily and then assured him with a big smile that I was just tired. Then he grabbed my arm to drag me away.

But my grandfather stopped him with a look, and gently laid a hand on my arm. Suddenly, I couldn’t contain my feeling and burst into tears. I looked at him and sobbingly said, “I don’t want to make sweets. I don’t want to run the store.” My grandfather stood quietly for a moment, absorbing this; then he looked at me and said simply, “Then you will not make sweets.” “But what else can she do?” my father said, frustrated. “Well, she’s an excellent storyteller. I imagine she’ll be a writer,” my grandfather said.

With both my hands holding the song book, I was at a loss what to do, when Henry, who noticed my embarrassment, came to my aid. He fixed my costume, tying the string with a fancy knot. He made me a joke about me “not” knowing knots. At this, the audience broke into laughter, but it felt OK.

I shot Henry a grateful glance. He smiled as if my mistake was no big deal. I got through the rest of the play successfully, still a shock in my mind. After we’d bowed and moved offstage, I went straight to Henry and tapped him on the arm. “Thanks,” I said genuinely. The bus driver, who had been listening to his explanation, stood up, approached the old man, and repeated the conductor's command to urge the old man to get off the bus. Apart from the harsh word from the driver and sobs from the old man, the whole bus was in a terrible silence. All the other passengers including me watched quietly.

Meanwhile, she reached inside her blouse, took out her remaining money, and handed the fares to the conductor. “Here is his fare and mine. Just stop giving him a hard time.” Later, she also shared her bread with the old man. And I found a Mona Lisa smile of peace and grace spreading across her face instead of worry.
