A man in Brisbane, Australia, survived a house fire early Wednesday morning because his pet parrot, named Eric, sounded the alarm.

Anton was asleep when his home caught fire just after 2:00 a.m., according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation(ABC). Anton didn't hear the smoke detector(探测器). Instead, he heard Eric calling his name-repeatedly, ABC reported. “I heard a bang and Eric--my parrot--he started to yell so I woke up and I smelled a bit of smoke,” Anton told ABC. “I grabbed Eric, opened the door and looked to the back of the house and saw some flames,” he added. “And so I grabbed my bag and bolted downstairs.” Officials told ABC that Anton's home did have a smoke detector, but it didn't go off before Eric started calling “Anton! Anton!” Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Acting Inspector Cam Thomas told ABC that the firemen were able to contain the fire before it spread to other properties (财产).

According to ABC, there may be a crime(犯罪)and policemen are looking into what caused the fire. In the meantime, Anton is glad that he and Eric survived. “I'm in shock but I'm fine,” he told ABC. “Everything's all right so long as I have myself and the bird.”

Being physically fit at age 18 is linked to a higher IQ, a new study finds. The researchers also show that fitness predicts greater educational and professional achievements later in life. Earlier studies have found links between physical fitness and intelligence in animals, children and older adults. But the relationship in young adults hasn't been clear.

In the new study, researchers used data to examine over 1.2 million young men born in Sweden between 1950 and 1976. All the men had their physical fitness and intelligence assessed at age 18. The researchers compared this information to details of later achievements in academic, social and economic aspects from other national databases and made some findings.

Fitness in the 18-year-olds was strongly linked to scores on intelligence tests. “Being fit means that you have good heart and lung capacity and that your brain gets plenty of oxygen”, says Dr. Michael Nilsson of the University of Gothenburg, “This may be one of the reasons why we can see a clear link with fitness.” The researchers also found that fit teens were more likely to get a university degree later in life. Fitness at age 18 was also linked to landing better jobs, with higher pay or management responsibilities.

The findings point to the importance of encouraging physical fitness in teens. “If so, physical education is a subject that has an important place in schools,” says Dr. Maria Aberg of the University of Gothenburg.

24.What is the new study about?

A.The relationship among young adults. B.IQ differences between children and adults.

C.Educational and professional achievements. D.Teenagers' physical health and intelligence.

25.How did the researchers make the findings?

A.By comparing data.  B.By using earlier studies.
C.By giving intelligence tests.  D.By interviewing young men.

26.What do the findings of the research suggest?

A.Similar researches should be made. B.Jobs with higher pay are hard to get.

C.It's time to improve teenagers' intelligence. D.Physical education should be stressed in schools.

    C

The public nowadays has a misunderstanding of forest fires, believing that fires should be kept out of every type of forest. Many of us can recall Smoky the Bear's famous warning: “Remember, only YOU can prevent forest fires”. However, that's not always the case. Under the right conditions, and when conducted safely, fire can create many environmental benefits as well as help prevent larger, uncontrollable wildfires.

After a forest fire, many wildlife species will move into recently burned areas to feed on these newly available foods. Some reptiles and amphibians such as the pine(松树)snake prefer, forests frequently burned by fire. As Herbert Stoddard put it, “One of the most harmful things modern man has done to birds has been his attempt to exclude(排除)fire from fire-type pine forests. Within a few years most forests choke up with bushes, lose their prairie--like vegetation(草原般植被)and can no longer support birds dependent on periodic burning for their food supply and proper cover.”

If you are asked to picture the forest floor, what do you see? Pine needles, cones, leaves, branches might come to mind-all sources of fuel. If these fuel sources build up without any type of removal, the “fuel load” can lead to fires catastrophic to forests and people alike. In contrast, prescribed fire can be used by forest professionals every couple of years to keep forest fuels at an appropriate and manageable level. They can also minimize the spread of pest insects and disease and remove unwanted tree and plant species. Plus, they can create and maintain important wildlife habitats rich in grasses and promote the growth of trees, wildflowers and other various plants.

Many organizations and agencies work to promote fire on the landscape when and where appropriate. Smokey Bear even has an updated warning: “Only You can Prevent Wildfires,” as the Forest Service has over the last few decades developed policies and procedures to include prescribed fire as a management tool,as well as continuing their work to prevent and fight wildfires.

27.Why did the author mention Smoky the Bear's warning?

A.To introduce the topic of the passage. B.To clarify a misunderstood concept.

C.To show the significance of fire prevention. D.To raise people's awareness of forest protection.

28.What can benefit birds according to Herbert Stoddard?

     A.Forest bushes. B.Fuel sources. C.Pine forests. D.Periodic burning.

29.What is the purpose of prescribed fire?

A.To put out wildfires  B.To keep the forest balance.

C.To remove tree and plant species. D.To keep the fuel rich in the forest.

30.What might be the best title for the passage?

A.One Match Can Start a Forest Fire B.Where There is Smoke There is a Fire

C.Not All Forest Fires are Created Equal D.Why Not Keep the Forest Fire Burning

When I was four years old, my master started training me hoping I could be a good horse. There was so much for me to learn. I learned to trot(小跑)and gallop(奔驰)steadily. I was taken to another farm next to the railway to get used to the thundering sound. My master never whipped(鞭打)me because I was always learning hard and well. Soon Mr. Gorden. my new master, came and took me to his house.

One autumn day, Mr. Gorden had to go to a distant town on business. On the way there was a lot of rain with a strong wind. When we came to the river, the water was so high that it nearly reached the wooden bridge. In one low part of the road the water was half-way up to my knees.

After Mr. Gorden finished his business, it was late in the afternoon. The wind was much stronger. As we went through the wood, I heard him say, “I wish we were out of this wood.” Indeed, I thought so, but just then there was a great noise of wood breaking, and a big tree came crashing down through the other smaller trees and fell across the road right in front of us! It was frightening and I stopped immediately.

We had no choice but to go back to the crossroads and take the longer road round to the wooden bridge. It was nearly dark now. We could see water over the middle of the bridge. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I was sure something was wrong, and I stopped suddenly.
