Beijing has made history as the first city in the world to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Let’s look back on some of the important factors that made the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games so impressive.

    the Olympic torch(火炬)

In recognition of Beijing’s status as the world's first city to host both the Summer and Winter games, the 2022 Olympic torch featured a similar design to the 2008 Olympic torch by the same color combination and artistic forms. What truly took viewers breath away was the moment when torch bearers (火炬手) passed the flame to another during the Olympic Torch Relay. The two Olympic torches locked into each other at the top, which represented fire and ice, symbolizing how it would bring light and warmth to the winter sports scene.

    the Olympic mascots(吉祥物)

The Winter Olympic mascot “Bing Dwen Dwen”, a cartoon image of a panda wearing a spacesuit, like a winter sports athlete from the future, has enjoyed wide popularity at home and abroad since its first appearance in 2019. “Bing Dwen Dwen” is a great combination of Chinese culture and the Olympic spirit. Hopefully, “Bing Dwen Dwen” can become a classic and leave lasting memories in Olympic history, said Cao Xue, head of the Beijing 2022 mascot design team.

Soon after the announcement of “Bing Dwen Dwen”, Beijing organizers also introduced “Shuey Rhon Rhon” as the mascot of the 2022 Beijing Paralympic (残奥会) Winter Games.

    the smart high-speed railway

As the countdown to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics continued, the new high-speed railway line connecting the capital with Olympic host city Zhangjiakou began to enter service. By cutting the travel time between the two from three hours to 47 minutes, the bullet train can run up to 350 kilometers per hour without a driver, becoming the world’s first smart high-speed railway. So, what makes them “smart”? Well, equipped with 5G signals, intelligent lighting and sensors to collect real-time data and detect any operational problems, the trains can automatically start, stop and adjust to the different speed limits between stations.

    21. Why is “Bing Dwen Dwen” so popular?

    A. Because it is a real panda, the national treasure of China.

    B. Because it looks like an athlete wearing a spacesuit.

    C. Because it has already become a classic in Olympic history.

    D. Because it shows both Chinese culture and the Olympic spirit.

    22. How long did it take to get to Zhangjiakou from Beijing by train before the new high-speed railway was put into use?

    A. About 47 minutes              B. About 3 hours and 47 minutes

    C. About 3 hours                 D. About 2 hours

    23. What can we know about the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games from the passage?

    A. The torch was the same as that in 2008 Olympics.

    B. It caught the world’s eye once again as the 2008 Olympics did.

    C. It had two mascots“Bing Dwen Dwen” and “Shuey Rhon Rhon”.

    D. Drivers on the new high-speed trains used 5G signals to operate the bullet train.

Barcelona’s opera house has celebrated its reopening to the public since the coronavirus pandemic (新冠疫情) put the world into a huge horror, but their opening night had an unusual audience. For its first concert, the theater refused the usual crowd of people and instead packed the house with plants. Yes, that’s correct. All 2, 292 seats at the Gran Teatre del Liceu were occupied by leafy green plants.

The idea was put forward by the artist Eugeno Ampudia and was broadcast live on the theater’s website. These lucky ficus trees, palms, and Swiss cheese plantswhich were brought in by local nurseries (苗圃)got the pleasure of hearing Puccini’s Crisantemi performed by the UceLi Quartet string(四重奏) musical group. Ampudia hopes that his idea and the work will inspire people to think more deeply about their relationship with nature and the concept of sustainability(持续性). “We are at the end of an era and that means that we have to change certain patterns,” he shares. “We don’t live in the same world as 90 days ago, and this means we have to think back everything that we do.”

As plants can respond to different vibrations(震动) caused by music, they certainly weren’t a passive audienceeven if they weren’t able to give applause. Now that the concert is over, each plant will be given to a different frontline healthcare worker who helped guide the country through its battle with the coronavirus.

The moving concert is a continuation of the Liceu’s wish to create a dialogue between music and the visual arts. Pictures and a video of the performance taken by Ampudia will now become part of La Caixa contemporary art collection.

    28. What was the special part of the concert?

    A. It had only 2, 292 seats.

    B. It made the world fall in horror.

    C. It gave plants opportunities to enjoy music.

    D. It welcomed audience with plants to come.

    29. Who gave the idea that the seats were occupied by leafy green plants?

    A. Barcelona.                      B. The Gran Teatre del Liceu.

    C. Eugeno Ampudia.                 D. The Uceli Quartet.

    30. Which statement may Eugeno Ampudia agree with?

    A. We didn’t do very well in dealing with nature.

    B. The healthcare workers were more important.

    C. The plants should have the equal rights.

    D. We did everything in a wrong way.

    31. In which part of a magazine can this text be read?

    A. Daily Hero.     B. Teens’ Life.     C. Art Around the World.     D. Animals and Plants.

Catch your reusable bags and kiss your plastic bags goodbye. Plastic waste is on its way out, thanks to these governmental bans from around the world.

From Indiana to Maine, governments at all levels in the US are forcing bans and improve recycling. People are shopping smarter and companies are doing better to ensure the protection of our environment. Slowly but surely, the world is entering a brighter future as more and more countries follow. But there’s still a lot of work to be doneor undone.

Since the 1950s, researchers say that about more than 8.3 billion tons of plastic has been produced. And 60% of that waste has ended up in the environment. That number has increased quickly over the years. For example, it was recorded that the world’s plastic production doubled from 1976 (50 million tons) to 1989 (100 million tons). It was highest at 368 million in 2019 before decreasing to 367 million in 2020.

A million tons decrease of plastic production is not enough to deal with the rising pressures plastic puts on the environment. We still do not know how long it takes for plastic to break down. It means that about 12 million tons of plastic waste that entered the ocean in 2010 is still breaking into microplastics and filling up the stomachs of birds and sea animals. The plastic going into our environment is not going away. While recent studies of plastic-eating enzymes and bacteria(酶和菌) offer some hope for the future of plastic waste management, the best way to deal with our environmental stress is through decrease.

In 2020, New York City began to ban plastic bags. But this wasn’t the first plastic bag ban in a US state. In fact, the US wasn’t even the first country to introduce this idea. Back in 2002, Bangladesh became the first country to implement a plastic bag ban. Since then, other countries have followed, introducing their own ways to fight with the continuing plastic bags.

    32. What do we know about plastic waste?

    A. There is a long way to solve the problem of it.

    B. We have completely cleaned it up.

    C. We have done nothing to deal with it.

    D. It is hardly increasing all over the world.

    33. How much plastic has been put into the environment since the 1950s?

    A. More than 8.3 billion tons.       B. 368 million tons.

    C. 100 million tons.               D. About 5 billion tons.

    34. What can be inferred about dealing with plastic?

    A. Cutting plastic waste down is still the best way.

    B. Sea animals can be eating most of it.

    C. Some enzymes and bacteria help a lot.

    D. It doesn’t take long to break it down.

    35. What does the underlined word “implement” in the last paragraph mean?

    A. Look at.      B. Carry out.     C. Keep up.     D. Take away.

    参考范文

    Dear Lisa,

Hearing that you want to know something about the Spring Festival in China, I am writing to give you a brief introduction as follows.

Falling on Jan.1st in Chinese lunar calendar, the Spring Festival, generally considered the most important festival of all, is celebrated to welcome the arrival of spring. On that day, family members, no matter how far they live, will get together, having a big feast. There are many traditional activities during the festival, of which making and eating dumplings is the most representative. Dumplings are made in the shape of ears, standing for reunion and harmony. Other activities such as putting up couplets and setting off firecrackers are also very popular. Today, people make good use of this festival to share happiness, strengthen relationship and pray for a better new year.

All the above is my introduction. I hope that you can fully enjoy yourself while traveling in China. Best wishes!

    Yours,

    Li Hua
