Grebet is a 22-year-old design student in Ivory Coast. Everywhere he looks, he sees signs of Western influence - from the shopping malls lining the streets in his home city to the way his classmates speak and dress. "We are living like we are Western people," he says. "It's like we are not proud of our own culture, " So he created emojis (表情符号) that show what he thinks is missing from global keyboard culture: symbols of history and daily life in Ivory Coast and neighboring countries.

In 2018, he released a free group of over 360 emojis in a mobile app called Zouzoukwa, which means "image" in the local language. Available on Android and iPhone, it now has over 120,000 downloads. It's more impressive than other emoji apps. The emojis show life and culture in Ivory Coast and the surrounding regions(地区), including traditional masks, African instruments and people dressed in a variety of prints and clothing that show regional heritage

Some of his favorite designs are a series of facial expressions commonly used in his region, but not available as a standard emoji. "They are expressions we often use in real life, but they were not represented on our phones," Grebet says. "The next step is to try and get some of my designs into the official emoji set, where they'd reach more than 2 billion people worldwide, as standardized symbols on smartphones everywhere,"

Grebet plans to keep traveling and expanding his experiences and his emojii pack. His designs so far are drawn from his experiences and research into a few African countries.

    21. What does Grebet think of their local culture at the beginning?

    A. It's full of inspirational symbols.

    B. It's influential in local people's life

    C. It's quite similar to Western culture

    D. It's absent in many parts of their life.

    22. What is Zouzoukwa's advantage over other emoji apps?

    A. It provides a better source of signs.

    B. It is designed based on daily items.

    C. It is related to the local life and culture.

    D. It downloads emojis on Android and iPhone

    23. What is Grebet most likely to do in the future?

    A. Create an official emoji set.

    B. Standardize some of his emojis.

    C. Research into African countries.

    D. Take a tour to popularize his designs

After graduation in 2018, Chen Minlin didn't hunt for a suitable job, but became a hiker (徒步旅行者). "Completing different hiking routes is like collecting cards in childhood," the 24-year-old told China Daily. Like Chen, more young people are going on journeys to rediscover the simple and beneficial joys of walking. According to Youxiake, a Hangzhou-based tour operator, more than 140,000 travelers signed up for hiking trips from last May to October. This represents a 9. 3% increase over the same period last year.

For most hikers, exploring nature can help them keep fit. Hiking in nature enables them to breathe fresh air, gives the whole body exercise and keeps them away from the crowds in urban public places. "I felt that exposure to nature and physical tiredness helped me counteract the negative effects of my pain at that time," Zhang Peng, 33, co-founder of Beiing Hiking Club, said, "Hiking is a liberating experience to enjoy the quietness in the wild. And the tiring climb makes me feel the vigor (活力) of life." Indeed, hiking has been part of his lifestyle.

With great passion, Zhang has gone on many classic routes across the country. The longest route he's ever finished is 240 kilometers. With poor Internet service in the wild, it encourages people to chat and interact with one another on the long walks. Zhang enjoys the social interaction, and the friendships it brings about.

For Liu Yanli, also a hiker, what she values most is that the activity brings her mental strength. Until this year, her life has always run smoothly and lacked hardship She longs for the sense of achievement that can be felt after overcoming the difficulties offered by hiking. Ever since 2013, she's hiked in many countries, including Nepal, Japan, Greece, New Zealand, Italy and Jordan. Once she felt she Was at the point of breaking down, but she carried on. "I was impressed and moved by my willpower. I'd never experienced that feeling in my daily life," Liu said. It's perhaps this unusual feeling that appeals to more youths. "Each time I came back from a trip, the contrast between the severe conditions in the wild and my Comfortable home helped to strengthen my happiness in everyday life," Liu added.

    24. Why does the author mention Chen Minlin's experience in Paragraph 1?

    A. To offer some popular hiking routes.

    B. To encourage more people to join in hiking.

    C. To show the popularity and appeal of hiking.

    D. To inform the readers of the character of hiking

    25. The underlined word "counteract" in Paragraph 2 probably means "

    A. Expose    B. increase     C. feel     D. reduce

    26. Why is Liu Yanli interested in hiking?

    A. It strengthens her willpower.

    B. It enables her to stay in shape.

    C. It helps her to achieve success

    D. It gives her a way to release pressure.

    27. What is the passage mainly about?

    A. The great benefits of hiking.

    B. Different attitudes towards hiking.

    C. The importance of exploring nature.

    D. Comparisons of people's hiking experiences

More than 11,000 scientists are warning that the Earth is facing a climate emergency. They represent several fields of study and come from 150 countries around the world. They approved a report that appeared in the publication Bioscience. It warns that the world will face "untold human suffering" if people do not make lasting changes in human activities that influence climate change. The new report is called "the World Scientists' Warning of a Climate Emergency". Three leaders of the study from the United States worked on the study with scientists from universities in South Africa and Australia. This is the first time a large group of scientists have jointly used the word "emergency" when talking about climate change.

"In spite of 40 years of global climate negotiations (谈判) , we have generally conducted business as usual and have largely failed to deal with this difficult situation," the study said. "Climate change has arrived and is speeding up faster than many scientists expected."

The report referred to 6 areas that the world needs to deal with immediately. The scientists appealed to nations to use energy more efficiently and cut their use of fossil fuels. They suggested that lawmakers approve taxes on the burning of carbon-based fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas.

The scientists expressed support for women's rights and making family planning services reach all people. They said this would help to reduce unexpected changes in the size of the human population. The report urges (敦促) people to move toward more of a plant-based diet. Other areas of concern include preventing permanent loss of some plant and animal species in the forest. The report notes that the public should take strong action to move politicians (政治家) to approve lasting policy changes.

The scientists added, " We believe that the outlook will be positive if decision-makers and all of humanity immediately respond to this warning of a climate emergency, and act to preserve the life on the Earth, our only home."

    28. What will happen if climate change continues to grow worse?

    A. Humans will be homeless.

    B. Humans will suffer quite a lot.

    C. Plants and animals will die out.

    D. Forests will be destroyed forever.

    29. How have people reacted to climate change in the past 40 years?

    A. They have ignored scientists' warning

    B. They have talked much but done little.

    C. They have gradually solved the problem

    D. They have controlled the difficult situation.

    30. Which of the following can help slow down climate change?

    A. Using energy in an efficient way,

    B. Approving taxes on renewable energy

    C. Stopping cutting down trees completely.

    D. Adopting a diet with more animal meat.

    31. What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Scientists' Hard Work of Saving the Earth

    B. The Important Reasons for Climate Change

    C. Scientists' Warning of a Climate Emergency

    D. The Influence of Human Activities on Climate

    D

Do you have the habit of running before breakfast in the morning? Exercising on an empty stomach won't do harm to you and it may actually help, depending on your goal and health conditions.

Exercising before eating comes with the risk of feeling light-headed due to low blood sugar. You might feel tired or uneasy, and won't be able to exercise as enthusiastically as you would have. It is important for older adults to eat something before exercising, especially in the morning. But if your primary exercise goal is weight loss, exercising on an empty stomach may come with some promising benefits, There's some research to support the idea of exercising in the fasted (禁食的) state.

However, it may not be suitable for everyone. "Some people advocate fasted exercise, but these people tend to be young and in amazing physical shape," says Douglas Paddon-Jones, a muscle researcher and professor of the University of Texas "They have no health problems, and what they're eating is of high quality and carefully picked. " On the other hand, exercising in the fasted state without proper planning or professional guidance may run the risk of unhealthy body changes.

For people who aren't athletes, eating food before exercising may be the best way to get the most fat-burning benefit. "You don't want to fill up; you just want to give your body a burst of energy to power your training period. After you exercisedrink some water, but wait 60 to 90 minutes before eating," says Shivani Sahni director of the nutrition program at Harvard University. "You're trying to take advantage of your metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate, so if you can go an hour or an hour and a half without eating, you'll make the most of the fat-burning response."

    32. Why does the author advise older adults to exercise in the fed state?

    A. To burn more fat.

    B. To lower blood sugar

    C. To exercise energetically

    D. To avoid being light-headed

    33. The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 refers to "

    A. weight loss

    B. exercising in the fasted state

    C. some research

    D. eating something before exercising

    34. What is Shivani Sahni's suggestion for people after exercising?

    A. Drinking some salty water.

    B. Finding a fitness instructor.

    C. Developing a new lifestyle.

    D. Going without food for some time.

    35. What is the author's attitude to exercising in the fasted state?

    A. Skeptical. B. Supportive. C. Cautious    D. Casual

    第二节(共5小题每小题2,满分10

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Competition is everywhere. It teaches us how to survive in a stressful world.

36 How many of us have seen young boys weeping because their teams didn't win an inter-school tourmament? How many of us have seen young teenagers cheat just to win? These are the effects of unhealthy competition.37

When it comes to encouraging healthy competition among children, the first thing is to set goals for them to stick to. 38

Since children may be easily affected by wrong ideas from popular media and the Internet, it's up to you to develop the right kind of spirit in them. Team spirit will help them grow into human beings who aren't easily annoyed by small losses or too excited by victories.39 So give them examples where family members refused to cheat to win.

40 When they take an exam, don't ask about how much they expect to score; instead, ask what they wrote about. If your son played a football match at school, don't ask him whether his team won or lost; ask him how many runs he sore and encourage him to score higher next time instead. When you let your children know that you're more interested in how they performed rather than whether they lost or won, they will surely try to better themselves

    A. Sending your children the right signals is equally important.

    B. However, children sometimes can be hit a lot by competition.

    C. However, you mustn't push them too hard with too high a goal

    D. We should also encourage healthy competition among children.

    E. Thus its important to develop healthy competition among children.

    F. Care about children's performances instead of the results in a sports match.

    G. Besides, they don't want to adopt any method just to win, like cheating or lying.

    Dear Editor,

Recently, I’ve often seen elderly people unable to use smartphones in travel, medical treatment, consumption and so on, which causes inconvenience in their daily life. So, I’m writing to tell you about the problem and make some suggestions.

I think the government should take effective measures to solve it. Firstly, many traditional ways of services, like cash payment, should be kept because elderly people are familiar with them. Besides, activities are needed to provide free technical training for them so that they can use smartphone applications easily.

Finally, volunteers can be organized to help them in public places when they’re in trouble.

I hope the convenience of smart services for the elderly will be improved.

                                                        Yours sincerely,

                                                          Li Hua
