When I got home after dropping out of college in my junior year because of depression, I didn't want to get out of bed every day. But my parents wanted me to, so I just transferred myself to the couch in the living room. Sometimes I would turn on the TV and watch marathons, but mostly I just sat there, lost in thought.
One day when I was lying on the couch, not knowing what to do, I thought since I had been out of school for a long time, I might as well do something productive in my life. I looked at my options. I could attend online college classes, go to in-person events just to get out of the house, or take up a hobby. But none of these things made me happy, and my depression seemed to keep me drowning in low spirits.
However, there was something that was my thing -entrepreneurship(创业). No matter what kind of day I'm having now, the mere mention of start-ups still cheers me up. I have been doing business in some kinds of forms ever since I was a kid, and despite everything, this passion has never changed.
So I started thinking of ideas, seeing which one could become practical business. I spent my days being glued to a wide purple notebook and a pen in hand, sometimes moving from the couch to the table on our back porch in the mornings. If I got up early enough, I'd watch the sun come up. It was there, in the still mornings, that I learned about life and started to look back on mine.
With time going on, the depression started to lift. I was making more progress in my recovery, and the good days were more frequent than the bad. I started a couple of different businesses, eventually settling on a web design business, and did a lot of experiments and changed my ideas. After a period of time, things started to work.

    A. Being busy with. B. Being excellent in.
    C. Being excellent in. D. Being associated with.
    27. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. How I overcame my depression B. How I found peace inside
    C. Why I dropped out of college D. Why I wanted to start a business
    C
We all know that decision-making and behavior vary across diverse societies and people are influenced by cultural norms(规范)before they grow into an adult. But the stage that the normative information starts to come into play remains a secret.
Dr. Bailey House, a psychology expert at the University York, and his team conducted a new research, which was focused on eight societies across the world. The team examined the behavior of children and adults when they were asked to engage in specific sharing tasks. Once the sharing patterns were established among the adults in each community, the scientists worked with the subjects to figure out the possible reactions they'll have.
Children from both urban and rural communities in eight countries were presented with two options: to keep a rewards for themselves and give another reward to a stranger, or to keep both reward for themselves. Children under seven mostly chose the selfish option in all communities, while children eight and older were much more likely to follow the adults' patterns and share.
These results suggest that during middle childhood, at the ages of from 8 to 12, children become sensitive to culturally-specific information about how to behave. This "information" is encoded(把---编码)in local norms, which children acquire through a developed human psychology for learning and agreeing with normative information.
Dr. Bailey House said, "One of the implications of the study is that we should start to pay attention not just to what children know but why they start to respond to the norms. The next step is to pose the question of what is happening in a child's development between the ages that makes them more responsive to social norms around them. The goal of the work is to better understand how culture and psychology work together to produce human diversity in cooperation and other behaviors."
    28. Why was the research conducted?
    A. To prove impact of parents' behavior on children.
    B. To examine what affects children's sharing patterns.
    C. To study when social norms begin to shape people.
    D. To compare behavioral distinction in different societies.
    29. What does the underlined word "subjects" in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. Children. B. Sharing tasks. C. Adults D. Different communities.
    30. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A. The classification of the children. B. The response of the children to the research.
    C. The characteristics of the children. D. The desire of the children to share with others.
    31. What do Dr. Bailey House's words imply?
    A. The ages of from 8 and 12 are an essential stage for children.
    B. Children are more sensitive to social norms than adults.
    C. Culture and psychology decide children's development.
    D. Reasons for children following social norms are unknown.
    D
A decade ago, at the end of my first semester teaching at Captain, my student Jack stopped by for office hours. He sat down and burst into tears. My mind started cycling through a list of events that could make a college junior cry: His girlfriend had broken up with him; he had been accused of cheating in exams; he forgot to turn in papers before the deadline. "I just got my first A minus," he said.
Year after year, I watch in depression as students are crazy about getting straight A's. Some sacrifice their health; a few have even tried to charge their school after falling short. They believe top marks are a ticket to elite (精英的)graduate schools and rewarding job opportunities. I was one of them, I started college with the goal of graduating with a GPA of 4.0. It would be a reflection of my brainpower and willpower, showing that I had the right things to succeed. But I was wrong.
The evidence is clear: Across industries, research shows that the association between grades and job performance is modest in the first year after college and insignificant within a handful of years. For example, at Microsoft, once employees are two or three years out of college, their grades have no bearing on their performance. (Of course, it must be said that if you got D's, you probably wouldn't end up at Microsoft.)
Academic grades rarely assess qualities like creativity, leadership and teamwork skills, or social, emotional and political intelligence. Yes, straight A students master large amounts of information and reproduce it in exams. But career success is rarely about finding the right solution to a problem-it's more about finding the right problem to solve. This might explain why Steve Jobs finished high school with a GPA of 2. 65, and Martin Luther King Jr. got only one A in his four years at Morehouse.
    32. Why did Jack feel sad?
    A. His girlfriend abandoned him. B. He was caught cheating in exams.
    C. He failed to get straight A's. D. He didn't hand in his paper in time.
    33. What did the author once believe?
    A. It was wrong to care too much about marks. B. Falling short was schools' fault.
    C. Marks didn't reflect willpower and brainpower. D. Top marks meant well-paid job offers.
    34. Why are the employees at Microsoft mentioned?
    A. To show academic excellence isn't a strong predictor of career performance.
    B. To stress the company values employees with top marks.
    C. To introduce successful examples in the technology industry
    D. To indicate academic performance is important.
    35. What should people focus more on for career success?
    A. How to solve a problem. B. What problem to be solved.
    C. How to be a creative leader. D. What to do with detailed information.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It's not always easy to run an energy- efficient house. But there are some simple things anyone can do.
    Go LED with your lighting
There are several benefits to switching to energy-efficient light bulbs. One of them is saving money -though the LED bulbs might cost more than traditional bulbs, the average saving on LED bulbs is $ 75 a year. 36 LED bulbs can last years or even decades.
Don't run your air conditioner constantly
As the weather starts to warm, you might be thinking about the right time to turn on your air conditioner. 37 Air conditioner units are among the most energy-consuming appliances in your home. Using electrical fans instead of your air conditioner is much more efficient and it's a big money saver, too.
    38
On those days when you treat a large crowd and are low on time, don't beat yourself up if you have to use disposable(一次性的)dishware. This method reduces your water usage and saves energy. And as a bonus, if your city offers roadside recycling, your paper plates may qualify.
    Update your insulation(隔热)
All that work you're doing to save energy in your home could go to waste if it's not properly insulated. If you can't insulate the whole house, pay special attention to the roof: it reduces air flow from outside. By updating your insulation, you're saving money. 39
    Take showers instead of baths
A full bathtub requires about 70 gallons of water. 40 Showers are quite different-taking a five-minute shower uses only 10 to 25 gallons!
    A. But do you really have to?
    B. You should use your air conditioner smartly.
    C. Turn off water when not using it.
    D. Plus, you needn't change them frequently.
    E. Don't feel guilty about using paper plates.
    F. And it's also easier to control your home temperature.
    G. Even if you don't fill it to the top, it still uses much more water.

"Attention! Everyone! I would like you guys to meet Jose from Mexico. He is a new here, so be nice to him and show him around," said Mrs Espinoza.
No one talked and the classroom was silent. And then some students stared at Jose and began to whisper to each other. Jose was wearing loose gray pants and a dirty white shirt. His shoes made a short and loud sound when he walked to his desk. Everyone giggled (咯咯地笑) at the sound, but no one talked to him. I wondered how he felt being here and having everyone's eyes on him and even being laughed at. I wanted to say "Hi" but I was afraid that I might be made fun of for talking to "the new kid".
In the following days, Jose was lonely and he struggled to fit into the new life. Besides, it was hard for him to learn a new language and make new friends in the new school.
Every day he would sit by himself and eat his lunch quietly, without a word, just focusing on his food. Many of the students would pass by and make unfriendly comments on him. He would just frown(皱眉)and look down at the floor. I wanted to be kind to him but still I couldn't take the first step.
When I got home, I talked to my sister about Jose. I told her about him being new here and about how the students at school treated him. Then I told her that I wanted to talk to him but I was worried that my friends would make fun of me. She said with a smile, "If they are your true friends, they will stick by you no matter what you do. You know, those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. "The next day, I knew exactly what I was going to do.
    Paragraph 1
During the lunch time, I got my lunch and walked towards Jose.

    Paragraph 2:
As days went on, I kept talking to Jose but I noticed I was losing some friends.

    作文二参考范文
    Paragraph 1:
During the Lunch time, I got my lunch and walked towards Jose. Everyone looked at me, wondering what I was about to do. I sat next to him. He just kept eating his food without saying a word. I decided I'd have to start the conversation. I said, "Hi!" He looked up at me with a big smile. I smiled back to him immediately. While we talked and ate our food together, I realized he was a nice and kind guy. We talked about sports and hobbies. Jose told me that living in America was really different from living in Mexico
    Paragraph 2:
As days went on, I kept talking to Jose but I noticed I was losing some friends. Regardless of that, I still stayed with Jose and stood by him. And joyfully some kids gradually came to join us and stuck by us. Jose and I became best friends and we helped each other in life and study. From little kids in fourth grade to young adults in tenth grade, Jose has always been there for me since that day. So we should never judge someone by the way they look or dress-they might end up changing our life.
