Brothers Ayaan and Mickey Naqvi, who live in Shelton, Connecticut, were decorating their family Christmas tree last year when one of their favorite ornaments(装饰品)was destroyed. While the ornament was beyond repair, from its broken pieces sprang a bright idea: What if there was a better way to hang ornaments so they’d be truly secure? From that, the Ornament Anchor(装饰锚)was born.
Using a special system, Ayaan created the model and presented it for a school project. The reception(反响)was overwhelmingly favorable--so favorable in fact, the boys quickly turned their invention into a potential money-making product.
This wasn’t the boys’ first commercial invention: A previous invention landed the pair and their family on a TV programme Shark Tank. While they didn’t cut a deal, it was a true learning experience.
From $1,000 in sales in six hours at a local Christmas trade show, the Ornament Anchor went on to be displayed on Good Morning America. In one year, the brothers’ invention has brought in more than $250,000.
After their success, Ayaan and Mickey are determined to pay their good fortune forward by contributing 10% of their profits to local animal shelters. “Ever since I was super young, I’ve had a fascination with all of life’s creatures,” Ayaan explained. “My goal is to help as many animals in need as I can.”
The boys admit that starting a new business in 2020 had its challenges. While they are enjoying their success, adjusting to distance learning due to the coronavirus lockdown isn’t easy.
Through the difficult times, they say they’ve just tried to take things one step at a time and keep a positive attitude because that--along with the love and support of their family--is what keeps them anchored(稳定).
    24. What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
    A. The family Christmas tree.
    B. The ways of hanging ornaments.
    C. The brothers’ favourite ornaments.
    D. The inspiration for the Ornament Anchor.
    25. What benefits did the brothers get from the Anchor?
    A. They made a lot of money.
    B. They were on Shark Tank.
    C. They traded with Good Morning America.
    D. They were praised for holding a trade show.
    26. What will the brothers do after their success?
    A. Give up distant learning. B. Expand their business quickly.
    C. Donate money to animal shelters. D. Support their family independently.
    27. Which of the following can best describe the brothers?
    A. Patient and reliable. B. Creative and caring.
    C. Optimistic and anxious. D. Committed and humorous.
    C
Although ethics(道德)lessons are common around the world, scientists are unsure if the lessons can actually change behavior. But a new study found that a single ethics lesson may have had lasting effects.
The researchers investigated one lesson’s impact on eating meat. They chose this particular behavior for three reasons, according to study co-author Eric, a philosopher at the University of California: students’ attitudes to the topic are variable, behavior is easily measurable, and eating less meat is good because it reduces environmental harm and animal suffering. The researchers studied students in four classes. Half of them read an article on the ethics of factory-farmed meat, watched an 11-minute video on the topic and joined a 50-minute discussion. The other half focused on charitable giving instead. Then, the researchers studied their meal--card purchases for that semester--nearly 14,000 receipts(收据)for almost 500 students. “It’s an awesome data set,” says Nina Strohminger, a psychologist who teaches business ethics and was not involved in the study.
For students who discussed meat ethics, meal purchases containing meat decreased from 52 to 45 percent--and this effect held steady for the study’s duration of several weeks. Purchases from the other group remained at 52 percent.
“That’s actually a pretty large effect for a pretty small intervention(干涉,干预).” Eric says. Strohminger agrees, “The thing that still blows my mind is that just one ethics lesson should have such an obvious effect.”
Eric believes the greatest impact came from classmates or teaching assistants leading the discussions. Second, the video may have had an emotional impact. Least influential, he thinks was argument. Now the researchers are investigating the specific effects of teaching style, teachers’ eating habits and students’ video exposure.
    28. How did the researchers carry out the study?
    A. By making a comparison. B. By introducing a concept.
    C. By presenting an argument. D. By referring to another study.
    29. What does the underlined phrase “blows my mind” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Annoys me. B. Surprises me. C. Bothers me. D. Frightens me.
    30. According to Eric, what may have the least effect on students’ meat purchases?
    A. Argument. B. Teaching style. C. Teaching assistants. D. The video exposure.
    31. What is the purpose of the study?
    A. To improve students’ lifestyles.
    B. To call on students to eat less meat.
    C. To encourage students to take ethics lessons.
    D. To tell the effects of ethics lessons on behavior.
    D
Listening to new music is hard. Not hard compared to going to space or war, but hard compared to listening to music we already know.
There is a physiological explanation in our desire to seek comfort in the familiar. When it comes to hearing music, a network of nerve called the corticofugal(离皮质的) network helps classify the different patterns of music. When a specific sound is reflect in our brains, our brains release an amount of dopamine (多巴胺),the main chemical source of some of our most intense emotions. This is the essential reason why music triggers such powerful emotional reactions.
Take the chorus of a song by Adele or Bruce Springsteen, many of which have very recognizable melody(旋律). The majority of our brains have memorized these melodies. When the corticofugal network realizes that Springsteen chorus, our brains release just the right amount of dopamine.
But when we hear something that hasn't already been mapped onto the brain, the corticofugal network goes a bit out of control, and our brains release too much dopamine as a response. When there is no map or pattern to attach to, music can be realized as unpleasant or bad.
That's what happened one night in Paris in 1913. The piece that was shown at the Theatre des Champs-elysees for the first time that night was Igor Stravinsky' s The Rite of Spring. As described in the daily newspaper Le Figaro, many members of the audience could not understand this new music. After the failure of that evening, however, the ballet continued running at the theater for many months. At the second, there was noise only during the latter part of the ballet; at the third,‘thunderous applause' and little protest. At a concert performance of Rite one year later, ‘excitement and adoration' swept over the crowd.
We are built to avoid the uncertainty of newness and our brains actually fight against the unfamiliarity of life. The act of listening to new music is hard, but it’s necessary. Our brains change as they recognize new patterns in the world, which is what makes brains useful.
    32. According to the passage, why is it hard to listen to new music?
    A. Because our brains tell us it' s unpleasant.
    B. Because new music tend to be unappealing.
    C. Because new music can trigger emotional reactions.
    D. Because our brains release dopamine when listening to new music.
    33. Why do people like the chorus of Adele's song?
    A. Because it is familiar to us. B. Because it is easy to memorize.
    C. Because it has a specific sound map. D. Because it affects the network of nerves.
    34. What's the purpose of paragraph 5?
    A. To show that people are changeable.
    B. To introduce an event happening in 1913.
    C. To appeal to people to listen to new music.
    D. To prove that people tend to dislike new music.
    35. What may be talked about next?
    A. Ways of listening to new music.
    B. Other activities that benefit our brains.
    C. Benefits we can get from listening to new music.
    D. Reasons why we are built to avoid the uncertainty.

Every day, in all kinds of weather, thousands of men and women jog. 36 Most joggers begin because they hear it is a very good exercise. Jogging makes the heart stronger and helps people lose weight. It can also help them feel better about themselves.
Donald Robbins, who is forty-two years old and works in an office, began jogging a few years ago because he felt he was too fat. At first, he could only run about 100 yards. It took him three months to be able to run a mile. 37 Many joggers, like Donald Robbins, feel that if they can succeed in jogging, they can succeed at other things also, and quite often this feeling helps them at their jobs.
Should you jog too? 38 Jogging may be too much exercise for you.
Does jogging cost much? No, it costs almost nothing. But it is very important to have a good pair of shoes that are made especially for jogging. 39
How fast should you go? Jog with a friend and talk to each other as you run. If you have difficulty in talking, you’re going too fast.
40 Remember not to go too far too soon. In fact, you should walk, not run, the first few times. Then do some short jogs, but no more than what you can do comfortably. After that, increase your distance a quarter or half mile every two weeks or so. Maybe in a few years, you can run in a marathon too. Thousands of people do.
    A. How far should you jog?
    B. Jogging can aid weight loss.
    C. Why has jogging-running become so popular?
    D. If you do, be sure to ask your doctor for advice.
    E. It is a popular physical activity that can keep you fit.
    F. But two years later, he ran in a marathon race over twenty-six miles.
    G. They protect your feet and legs from the shock of running on hard surface.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.
She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of the scolding(指责) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes…,but I don’t have money on me.” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness! ” said Jenny as she dried her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so cruel compared to a stranger! ”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless; she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn't I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel thankful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

    第二节 读后续写
    One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house. “Where could my mother be?” she wondered, “Was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
    Paragraph 2:
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms. “Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled patting her back gently.
