De Luca was 30 when she decided her current path wasn’t working. Forced to start at the bottom,a former Macy’s store manager and retail and furniture buyer, bravely and confidently took a job as an editorial assistant at Glamour.

To get the job at Glamour, De Luca put her past experience into a story. She explained, “People had a hard time believing I wanted to start from the beginning.” Then, not wanting to be “editorial assistant forever”, she got promoted twice in three years, constantly reminding herself of past successes whenever she began to doubt herself.

De Luca stressed the importance of learning, when one is starting over and working with people a lot younger than her. Another thing De Luca did along the way was stay stimulated. Boredom is unavoidable, and you can either allow it to take over or you can manage it. Every time she found herself starting to feel bored, she “made people aware”. Subsequently, she’d be given more work and greater responsibilities.

It’s this open communication that De Luca has continually found worthwhile-it’s also something she learned from her mother at an early age. “If you don’t ask, you don’t get,” De Luca’s mom would say, encouraging her daughter to always put herself in touch with others who may be of assistance in some way. “The people you know, especially the right people, can help you strategize and think through difficulties.”

Making a decision to change careers-regardless of how old you are isn’t easy, but it can be done. “If your mind is set on it, for others seeking a major change, De Luca suggests, “you’ll make it happen. In many ways, just knowing you’re ready for something new means your course is already in motion.

    24. How does De Luca deal with self-doubt?

    A. By correcting her current path.

    B. By asking for help from others.

    C. By reviewing previous achievements.

    D. By encouraging herself with promotions.

    25. What could one probably get by following De Luca’s mother’s advice?

    A. Making more friends.

    B. Communicating more effectively.

    C. Being trusted with responsibilities.

    D. Getting favorable resources.

    26. What may be De Luca’s advice for people who seek career change?

    A. Take one’s age into consideration.

    B. Get ready for different tasks.

    C. Be determined once a decision is made.

    D. Set your mind on doing it perfectly.

    27. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A. It’s never too late to start over B. Hard work always pays off

    C. If you don’t ask, you don’t get D. Be committed to your dream

    C

I read somewhere that we spend a full third of our lives waiting. But where are we doing all of this waiting, and what does it mean to an impatient society like ours? To understand the issue, let's take a look at three types of “waits”.

The very purest form of waiting is the Watched-Pot Wait. It is without doubt the most annoying of all. Take filling up the kitchen sink as an example. There is absolutely nothing you can do while this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it’s full. During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This kind of wait makes the waiter helpless and mindless.

A cousin to the Watched-Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of self-control. Properly preparing packaged noodle soup required a Forced Wait. Directions are very specific. “Bring three cups of water to boil, add mix, simmer(用文火炖)three minutes, remove from heat, let stand five minutes.” I have my doubts that anyone has actually followed the procedures strictly. After all, Forced Waiting requires patience.

Perhaps the most powerful type of waiting is the Lucky-Break Wait. This type of wait is unusual in that it is for the most part voluntary. Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen.

Turning one’s life into a waiting game requires faith and hope, and is strictly for the optimists among us. On the surface it seems as ridiculous as following the directions on soup mixes, but the Lucky-Break Wait well serves those who are willing to do it. As long as one doesn’t come to rely on it, wishing for a few good things to happen never hurts anybody.

We certainly do spend a good deal of our time waiting. The next time you’re standing at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you’ll have to eat until a large bag of cash falls out of the sky, don’t be desperate. You’re probably just as busy as the next guy.

    28. While doing a Watched-Pot Wait, we tend to ____________.

    A. keep ourselves busy             B. get absent-minded

    C. grow anxious                  D. stay focused

    29. What is the difference between the Forced Wait and the Watched-Pot Wait?

    A. The Forced Wait requires some self-control.

    B. The Forced Wait makes people passive.

    C. The Watched-Pot Wait needs directions.

    D. The Watched-Pot Wait engages body and brain.

    30. What can we learn about the Lucky-Break Wait?

    A. It is less voluntary than the Forced Wait.

    B. It doesn’t always bring the desired result.

    C. It is more fruitful than the Forced Wait.

    D. It doesn’t give people faith and hope.

    31. The author supports his view by_______.

    A. exploring various causes of “waits”

    B. describing detailed processes of “waits”

    C. analyzing different kinds of “waits”

    D. revealing frustrating consequences of “waits”

    D

Star Wars fans would be familiar with the good relationship between humans and droids ( 机器人) in the movies. In the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story, LandoCalrissian risked his life to rescue his co-pilot, a female droid L3-37. In real life, a humanoid robot, Sophia, has recently been granted (给予) citizenship in Saudi Arabia. Increasingly, people are ready to see robots as resembling humans. Given this phenomenon, I believe it is necessary to consider giving robots certain rights humans enjoy.

Experts have argued that since robots have now acquired human-like qualities, it is appropriate to consider if they should have rights just as humans. Sophia has a human like face and utilizes artificial intelligence to respond to speech and express emotions. For such a lifelike being that is potentially capable of expressing emotions, does it not deserve the right to be loved and respected?

Robots should also be given legal and moral protection as harming a robot may be similar to harming humans. Since people tend to form attachments to social robots, it becomes possible for companies to control the hardware and software to exploit this emotional attachment. There is a danger that data that is stored in the robot could be uploaded to the cloud. There would then possibly be situations in which the government or private sector retrieves (检索数据) the information stored in a robotic toy or social robot. With these uncertainties, it is clear why robots should be protected, just as humans.

An even more irresistible reason to grant human rights to the robots is the protection of societal values. We should stop a young child from kicking or tearing a toy robot apart because it resembles a real life.Giving robots certain rights will ensure that societal standards are set.

Still, many have roundly argued that no matter how sophisticated (老练的) they may be, robots are still machines. It is therefore quite ridiculous to treat them as living beings and grant them rights. However, with the advancement in technology, it is a matter of time before robots are fully anthropomorphized (赋予人的特征), and we would have to consider granting them rights.

In conclusion, deciding whether robots deserve human rights is by no means an easy task, but now is the time to start the conversation on this and seriously consider the possibility.

    32. Why does the author mention the two examples in the first paragraph?

    A. To remind readers of the importance of robots.

    B. To set readers thinking about an issue about robots.

    C. To discuss the necessity of rescuing robots.

    D. To describe the relationship between humans and robots.

    33. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?

    A. There is possible information risk.

    B. Robots should be legally and morally protected.

    C. Humans are doing harm to robots.

    D. Robots should be given more emotional attachment.

    34. What’s the author’s attitude towards granting robots human rights?

    A. Doubtful.     B. Negative.       C. Favorable.    D. Uncaring.

    35. What’s the structure of the passage?

     (=Para. 1  =Para. 2  =Para. 3  =Para. 4  =Para. 5  =Para. 6)

    A.  ②③④⑤⑥     B.  ①②③④⑤

    C.  ②③④⑤⑥                D.  ②③④⑤

Why sensitive kids will make the world a better place

Sensitive children are these special, observant people. They notice when you’re sad, and they ask why. They’re often old souls with big hearts who want to make other people happy.   36   Why?

Because they’re creative. Sensitive kids typically have incredible imaginations.   37   Their creativity shines through in all they do, and ideas just come to them. They notice that tiny little caterpillar(毛虫) crawling on the sidewalk and the puffy (松软洁白的) clouds in the sky.

Because they’re supportive.   38   They believe in people and want to see them do well. They want to make the people they love happy. Sensitive people are often great listeners — they want to know people and understand what they’re thinking and feeling. They want to be there for you when you need them.

39   They can often bring another perspective to the table because they tend to think differently. They’re insightful and reflective — they like to take the time to be alone and spend time with their thoughts. They appreciate calm and quiet moments.

Because they’re strategic. Psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron’s and author of The Highly Sensitive Child says highly sensitive children are. “  40  ” Our sensitive ones are the leaders.

    A. They’re dreamers.

    B. Because they’re unique.

    C. Because they are emotional.

    D. They’re going to do big things in this world.

    E. They try to build up those around them, not tear them down.

    F. They want to celebrate with them if they’re happy and excited.

    G. Quick to grasp subtle changes and generally behave conscientiously.

Shangsi Festival, also known as the Double Third Festival, is an ancient Chinese festival celebrated on the third day of the third lunar month. It is a festival mainly   41   by Chinese ethnic groups, including Han and Zhuang, to ward off evil   42   and natural disasters. The Shangsi Festival is also a day considered to be the   43   birthday of the Yellow Emperor.

There are many theories about the festival's true origins. Some say it   44

from a dinner party held on the banks of the Qushui River during the Zhou Dynasty (1100 - 221 BC).   45   say it comes from the custom of getting   46   of evil by bathing in the river. On this day, people would hold a sacrificial ceremony by the riverside to honor their ancestors,   47   bathe in the river with herbs to rid themselves of misfortunes and purify their bodies. Following   48  , young men and women would go for a spring outing based on these scenes   49   in the ancient text, Shi Jing (The Book of Songs).

The   50   Wang Xizhi from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD 317 - 420) wrote in his Lanting Xu (Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion) about how   51   men took a bath and composed poetry while drinking from cups left along the   52   river.

In the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 907), it is said the emperor would treat his followers beside the river,   53  ordinary people enjoying drinks and sightseeing. After the Ming and Qing   54  (AD 1368 - 1911), the festival developed into a spring outing   55   lively activities like drifting cups, drifting eggs, drifting dates, stone throwing, wearing willow-wreaths, hiking and eating glutinous rice and listening to choir music.

    续写的词数应为150左右

When I was a boy of nine, I used to help Mrs. Long, a retired art teacher who lived across my home. She paid me very little for the help, but she taught me how to paint and promised me, “When Christmas comes, I shall have a present for you.”

I kept wondering what it would be. The boys I played with had baseball gloves, ice skates and bicycles. I hoped that Mrs. Long would buy any one of them for me.

“But it would hardly be ice skates,” I reasoned with myself. “An old woman like Mrs. Long wouldn’t know much about ice skates.”

I also ruled out the bicycle because she was just a retired art teacher in the local school and could not afford it.

On my last day at work, Mrs. Long said, “You’ve been a very good boy. On Christmas Eve I’ll make a present for you. Please come to my house and collect it.”

“Since she is going to have the present in her house, and since she will make it, unquestionably she is going to give me a pair of baseball gloves,” I thought. Actually, I became so convinced that I could imagine myself playing baseball with my friends in those gloves.

A day before the Christmas Eve, I could wait no longer and presented myself at the door of Mrs. Long’s house and said, “Can I have my present today, Mrs. Long?”

“I’ve been waiting for you,” she said, leading me into her house. She sat me in a chair, disappeared to another room, and in a moment stood before me holding a package which under no circumstances could hold a bicycle or a pair of skates, or even a baseball glove.

I lifted it from her hand and found it was extremely light.

“What is it?” I asked with disappointment on my face.

“A kind of magic,” Mrs. Long said. “It can give you whatever you dream of if you have learned how to use it.”

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Suddenly, curiosity replaced my initial disappointment.

As we all know, jogging can be tiring, so wearing comfortable clothes and shoes is essential. In addition, during the jogging, please follow our coach’s instructions to make sure of our own safety.

The jogging will surely be unforgettable. Don’t hesitate to participate, and we will have a wonderful time together.

    第二节

Suddenly, curiosity replaced my initial disappointment. Her words were enough to set my mind dancing with all kinds of possibilities. By the time I reached home, I had the box on my knees, tearing at the colored string that bound it. There in the box lay 20 colorful pencils and a collection of coloring paper drawn by Mrs. Long. The pictures were so beautiful that I fell in love with them immediately.

It was not until some years later that I realized the real importance of the gift. It was much more significant than a baseball glove or a pair of skates, which would just satisfy a temporary desire. But the great present Mrs. Long gave me opened a window to a totally new world. Her gift was exactly what I needed, and it reached me at the time when I was best able to comprehend it.

    Text 1

M: Lily, this new skirt is for you. It may seem old-fashioned… but I hope you like it.

W: Oh my God, it’s such a classic skirt that I can’t wait to put it on.

    Text 2

W: Joe, I heard you went to Miami recently. Did you go there on holiday?

M: Far from it. I went there to meet an important client.

    Text 3

M: Excuse me, my phone is out of power. Could you tell me what time it is now?

W: Okay, my watch says 3:32 p.m., but it’s a quarter of an hour fast.

    Text 4

W: I baked fish pie last night. And it tasted good. Would you like the same thing for dinner tonight?

M: No. I’d like to try that new dish you learned online.

W: Great. It’s time to show my cooking skills.

    Text 5

M: Hey, Mandy, come here. Let’s watch this wonderful comedy together!

W: No thanks, I watched it last week. I prefer to watch the history program tonight.

M: Oh no, you may be disappointed. The show is not available today and a new sports documentary will be shown.

    Text 6

M: Haley, you’ve been at home all day. Why not hang out with your good friends to relax yourself?

W: Actually, I’ve made an appointment with Jane to watch a movie together in the evening.

M: Sounds good, but you must pay attention to your safety. Don’t come back too late. You have to work tomorrow.

W: Don’t worry about me. By the way, we’ll stop by the supermarket. Do you need me to buy anything for you?

M: Wow, you are so sweet. Please bring me some toast and a bottle of jam.

    Text 7

M: Wow, Gloria, you look much more beautiful in your new clothes.

W: Oh, thank you, Andy. Actually, it took me a long time to design it.

M: Well, do you get your design inspiration from the Internet or TV programs?

W: Neither, I usually look through magazines and watch fashion shows. Sometimes, I prefer to get inspiration from the little things in life. For example, my necklace was patterned after my favorite flowers.

    M: That’s amazing.

W: By the way, would you like to visit my design studio now? Maybe I can design a new tie for you there.

M: I’d love to, but I need to pick up an important thing from the mall right now.

    Text 8

M: Excuse me, I’m a guest eating here. I just want to tell you that I really enjoy your live music.

W: Wow, that’s my pleasure. Actually, I’m still a little nervous now.

M: Oh, please don’t be modest. Your performance was really perfect! How did you learn to play the guitar?

W: My father taught me how to play the guitar when I was 10 years old. Afterwards, I learned it on my own.

M: Nice going! So did you write all these songs by yourself?

W: Most of them were created by myself, and the rest were created by the members of my band.

M: Wait a minute. A band? It’s cool. But why are you performing here alone?

W: Hard to say. I need money to support my music dream. I also need to earn more money for college.

M: Wow, I believe your dream will come true in the near future.

    Text 9

W: We’re really moving into our new house! We’ve been saving money for years and now we’re finally paying it off.

M: I’m having a hard time believing it myself. We lived in that little apartment for so long. We’ll have more fun here!

W: There’s no doubt about that. Our old place was so old that you were always fixing things.

M: That’s right. Many things didn’t work normally.

W: Well, we won’t have those problems here. This is a big and bright house. I’m pleased we finally have a nice backyard. We’ll be able to have barbecue parties there.

M: Yeah, I’m pleased, too. I think you could plant some flowers there. And I can’t wait to have a dog.

W: Anyway, we need to start work now. First let’s unpack all the boxes. Then we’ll arrange the furniture.

M: Well, let’s start with this mirror. Does the mirror look good here?

W: Yes, it’s perfect. Now let’s put a small sofa beside the mirror. Should we put the coffee table against the wall?

M: No. Let’s put it in the middle of the living room.

    Text 10

M: When Alice looks through her social media, she’s stopped by the news that her company is about to be bought out by its biggest competitor. She quickly emails it to her team. But then Alice has a troubling thought. What if the story wasn’t true? After all, she didn’t check the source. There’s a lot you can do to avoid making the same mistake as Alice. Then how can you separate fake news from the truth? There are several ways to spot fake news.

    Develop critical thinking

It’s essential to approach what you see and hear critically.

    Check the source

Check the web address for the page you’re reading. Spelling errors in company names, or strange-sounding extensions like “.infonet” and “.offer” rather than “.com” or “.co.uk” , may mean that the source is suspect.

See who else is reporting the story

Has anyone else picked up on the story? What do other sources say about it?

⑱⑳Don’t take images at face value

Modern editing software has made it easy for people to create fake images that look real. However, there are some warning signs you can look out for, for example, strange shadows on the image.
