    A
Many people volunteer their time and energy to help others. There are different ways to meet other people's needs. Some provide education while others offer adventure. Many do both. And one typical group to be introduced today are history lovers.
Every year, they offer to find or document remains of lost societies and communities. These efforts take place across the world. For example, Forest Service experts and volunteers are working in the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California, looking for information about prehistoric and historic settlements of native Californians.
This kind of work interests Professor Steven Ortiz in Fort Worth, Texas. Every other year, he leads an archaeological dig (考古挖掘) in Israel. The dig is at Tel Gezer, halfway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Professor Ortiz directs the activities at Tel Gezer with Samuel Wolff, an Israeli archaeologist.
The city is linked to King Solomon, who appears in the writings of different religions. The experts, students and volunteers are hoping to learn more about the ancient city of Gezer Volunteers for the digs must be eighteen, although children may take part if they are with a parent. The youngest volunteer on the team is Steven Ortiz's ten-year-old son.
Volunteers must pay for their transportation and they will face many challenges. The work takes time, patience and often muscle strength. Besides, the ground may be hard and the sun may be hot. But why do people pay to volunteer to work? “For some, the dig is a journey undertaken for religious purposes. Some just value ancient history, and they want to be a part of uncovering it.
I tend to think we attract people who think they want a cross-cultural experience. They want to do something meaningful. They want to get their hands dirty. And they want to have a fun experience touring a foreign country." said Steven.
Volunteering for the archaeological dig provides all those things, and more. “You are helping science. You are helping history. But on weekends, especially for small children, they can have fun, travel in the country and see sights they do not normally see." Steven added.
    21. What can be inferred about the archaeological dig in Israel?
    A. It aims to seek for historic settlements of native Californians.
    B. Children can join in the dig without parents' company.
    C. The dig is a challenging but meaningful journey.
    D. Participants of the dig enjoy free transportation.
    22. Why does the author write the passage?
    A. To introduce the volunteer work of history lovers.
    B. To describe children's cross-cultural experiences.
    C. To analyze the significance of archaeological digs.
    D. To stress experts' efforts in archaeological research.
    23. What is the text?
    A. A book review.
    B. A news program.
    C. A research paper.
    D. An investigation report.

A few weeks ago, I drove down a back road in West Virginia. Sometime after I passed Spruce Mountain, my phone lost service—and I knew it would remain silent for the next few days. I was heading toward Green Bank, a town that agrees to the ban (禁止) on technology in the United States. The people there do without not only cellphones but also Wi-Fi , microwave ovens, and any other devices that create signals.
The ban is to protect the Green Bank Observatory, a group of radio telescopes (无线电望远镜)in a mountain valley. The telescopes are very powerful for human beings. Scientists travel here to measure gravitational (引力的) waves in the space. Astronomers study the stars. It has also become a destination for alien hunters who hope to discover messages there sent from other planets. And in the past ten years, the town has become a destination for people who believe they’re sick of cellphone towers.
I came in hopes of finding a certain kind of wildness and solitude (独处). I live in Massachusetts, and I often disappear into the forests and rivers to clear my head. I've always loved the moment when the bars on my phone disappear. When I’m out of range entirely, time grows elastic I feel deeply free.
In theory, I could achieve this kind of freedom anywhere by shutting off my cellphone. But that has never worked for me—and I doubt it doesn't for most other people either. Turn off your phone and you will turn it on again. To experience the deepest solitude, you need to enter the land where the Internet ends.
    24. What can be found in Spruce Mountain?
    A. Digital devices. B. Available smartphones.
    C. Radio telescopes. D. Cellphone towers.
    25. What kind of people may choose to go to Spruce Mountain?
    A. Supporters of green life.
    B. People against cellphones.
    C. Passionate hunters for wildlife.
    D. Scientists exploring the earth.
    26. How can you achieve real freedom according to the author?
    A. Shut off your phones and you will feel free.
    B. Switch your phone into flight mode.
    C. Go to Spruce Mountain in person.
    D. Go to somewhere without the Internet.
根据第二段“The ban is to protect the Green Bank Observatory, a group of radio telescopes (无线电望远镜)in a mountain valley.(这项禁令是为了保护位于山谷中的一组射电望远镜——绿岸天文台。)”
根据第二段“And in the past ten years, the town has become a destination for people who believe they’re sick of cellphone towers.(在过去的十年里,这个小镇已经成为那些认为自己厌倦了手机信号塔的人的目的地。)”
根据最后一段“In theory, I could achieve this kind of freedom anywhere by shutting off my cellphone. But that has never worked for me—and I doubt it doesn't for most other people either. Turn off your phone and you will turn it on again. To experience the deepest solitude, you need to enter the land where the Internet ends. (理论上,我可以在任何地方通过关闭手机来实现这种自由。但这对我来说从来都不起作用——我怀疑对大多数人来说也不起作用。关掉你的手机,你会再次打开它。要体验最深的孤独,你需要进入互联网的尽头。)”可知,作者认为,去一个没有互联网的地方才能实现真正的自由。故选D。
    C
There is something to be said for being a generalist, even if you are a specialist. Knowing a little about a lot of things that interest you can add to the richness of a whole, well-lived life.
Society pushes us to specialize, to become experts. This requires commitment to a particular occupation, branch of study or research. The drawback to being specialists is we often come to know more and more about less and less. There is a great deal of pressure to master one’s field. You may pursue training, degrees, or increasing levels of responsibility at work. Then you discover the pressure of having to keep up.
Some people seem willing to work around the clock in their narrow specialty. But such commitment can also weaken a sense of freedom. These specialists could work at the office until ten each night, then look back and realize they would have loved to have gone home and enjoyed the sweetness of their family and friends, or traveled to exciting places, meeting interesting people. Mastering one thing to the exclusion (排 除) of others can hold back your true spirit.
Generalists, on the other hand, know a lot about a wide range of subjects and view the whole with all its connections. They are people of ability, talent, and enthusiasm who can bring their broad perspective into specific fields of expertise (专长). The doctor who is also a poet and philosopher is a superior doctor, one who can give so much more to his patients than just good medical skills.
Things are connected. Let your expertise in one field fuel your passions in all related areas. Some of your interests may not appear to be connected but, once you explore their depths, you discover that they are. My editor Toni, who is also a writer, has edited several history books. She has decided to study Chinese history. Fascinated by the structural beauty of the Forbidden City as a painter, she is equally interested to learn more about Chinese philosophy. “I don’t know where it will lead, but I’m excited I’m on this pursuit.”
These expansions into new worlds help us by giving us new perspectives. We begin to see the interconnectedness of one thing to another in all aspects of our life, of ourselves and the universe. Develop broad, general knowledge and experience. The universe is all yours to explore and enjoy.
    27. What is good about being a generalist?
    A. You don’t need to be pushed by society.
    B. You will need to know less and less.
    C. You know more about your occupation.
    D. You can enjoy your life to the fullest.
    28. Paragraph 3 mainly talks about specialists’ ______.
    A. choices B. limitations C. regrets D. expectations
    29. According to the author, a superior doctor is one who ________.
    A. is fully aware of his talent and ability
    B. should love poetry and philosophy
    C. brings knowledge of other fields to work
    D. is a committed specialist in medicine
    30. What does the author intend to show with the example of Toni?
    A. Passion alone does not ensure a person's success.
    B. In-depth exploration makes discoveries possible.
    C. Seemingly unrelated interests are in a way connected.
    D. Everyone has a chance to succeed in their pursuit.
根据第一段的“There is something to be said for being a generalist, even if you are a specialist. Knowing a little about a lot of things that interest you can add to the richness of a whole, well-lived life. (即使你是一个专家,作为一个多面手也是有道理的。对很多你感兴趣的事情略知一二,就能让你的生活更加丰富多彩。)”可知,做一个多面手的好处是你可以尽情享受生活。故选D。
    28. 主旨大意题。根据第三段的“These specialists could work at the office until ten each night, then look back and realize they would have loved to have gone home and enjoyed the sweetness of their family and friends, or traveled to exciting places, meeting interesting people. Mastering one thing to the exclusion of others can hold back your true spirit.(这些专家每天晚上在办公室工作到10点,然后回顾过去,他们会意识到,他们本想回家享受家人和朋友的甜蜜,或去令人兴奋的地方旅行,遇见有趣的人。掌握一件事而排斥其他事会阻碍你真正的精神。)”可知,本段主要讨论专家的遗憾。故选C。
    29. 推理判断题。根据第四段的“The doctor who is also a poet and philosopher is a superior doctor, one who can give so much more to his patients than just good medical skills.”(一个既是诗人又是哲学家的医生是一个优秀的医生,他能给他的病人比良好的医疗技术更多的东西。)”
Let your expertise in one field fuel your passions in all related areas. Some of your interests may not appear to be connected but, once you explore their depths, you discover that they are.(事物是相互关联的。让你在某一领域的专长激发你在所有相关领域的热情。你的一些兴趣可能看起来没有联系,但一旦你探索了它们的深度,你会发现它们是联系的。)”可推断,作者想用托妮的例子来说明表面上不相关的兴趣在某种程度上是相关的。故选C。
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)
    阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Understanding Your Feelings Helps You Name And Tame (驯服) Them
We all experience various feelings all the time. Some of them feel great, some feel unpleasant, and it’s helpful to be able to recognize and understand how you’re feeling so you know how to deal with it.
____31____ They can include anger, sadness, worry, loneliness and shame, as well as surprise, happiness, courage and hope, among many others.____32____ All feelings are there to be felt and some can be more uncomfortable than others. It’s OK and natural to experience different emotions – and that includes emotions that might not feel nice.
To deal with your feelings you need to recognize what they are. ____33____ Are your fists clenched (攥紧)? Does it seem like there’s a knot in your stomach? Next, pay attention to what you’re thinking at this time. ____34____ Or are you thinking that you really don’t want to do something? Once you have identified how you’re feeling, you can label it by saying, for example, “I’m feeling angry” or “I’m feeling lonely” .
You can understand a difficult feeling and help yourselfto handle it. ____35____ If you’re upset about a difficult feeling, like “I’m feeling angry”, you might count to ten to calm down. Perhaps you notice “I’m feeling nervous”, and you might talk to someone about it. The person you talk to may be able to give you reassurance, more information, a different point of view, or even help you take action to deal with the cause of your difficult feeling.
    A. Experts call this “name it to tame it” .
    B. How can you deal with different feelings?
    C. Perhaps you have the thought, “It’s not fair” .
    D. Feelings are how people experience emotions.
    E. First of all, notice what’s going on with your body.
    F. They are shown through various body movements, to begin with.
    G. Feelings are sometimes labelled as good or bad but that isn’t helpful.
    【答案】DG EC A
    31. 空格后说“They can include anger, sadness, worry, loneliness and shame, as well as surprise, happiness, courage and hope, among many others.(它们可能包括愤怒、悲伤、担心、孤独和羞耻,也可能包括惊喜、快乐、勇气和希望,等等。)”,空格处应引出各种各样的感觉,D选项“Feelings are how people experience emotions.(感觉是人们体验情绪的方式。)”
    32. 空格后说“All feelings are there to be felt and some can be more uncomfortable than others.(所有的感觉都可以被感受到,有些感觉可能比其他感觉更不舒服。)”,说明感觉不分好坏,G选项“Feelings are sometimes labelled as good or bad but that isn’t helpful.(感觉有时被贴上好或坏的标签,但这并没有什么帮助。)”
    33. 由后文的“Next, pay attention to what you’re thinking at this time.(接下来,注意这个时候你在想什么。)”可知,空格处应说“首先该干什么”,E选项“First of all, notice what’s going on with your body.(首先,注意你的身体状况。)” 且其中的“what’s going on with your body(你的身体状况)”和空格后的“Are your fists clenched (攥紧)? Does it seem like there’s a knot in your stomach?(你握紧拳头了吗?你的胃好像有点难受吗?)”相呼应,空后就是说的身体的情况,因此E选项承上启下,符合语境,故选E。
    34. 空格前说“Next, pay attention to what you’re thinking at this time.(接下来,注意这个时候你在想什么。)”,因此空格处应提到你可能的想法,C选项“Perhaps you have the thought, “It’s not fair”.(也许你会想,“这不公平”。)”
    35. 空格后说“If you’re upset about a difficult feeling, like “I’m feeling angry”, you might count to ten to calm down. Perhaps you notice “I’m feeling nervous”, and you might talk to someone about it.(如果你因为一种困难的感觉而难过,比如“我很生气”,你可能会数到十来冷静下来。也许你注意到“我感到紧张”,你可能会和别人谈论这件事。)”,因此这里是在说人如何处理这些感觉,A选项“Experts call this “name it to tame it”.(专家称之为“给它命名并驯服它”。)”

Obviously, you will tell us what is special about the culture. For example, some cultures express the consistence of man and nature.

My school had a tradition during the ninth-grade graduation: A beautiful gold and green jacket (the school colors) was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years.
I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forward very much to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed five children, so I was given to my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us because we couldn’t afford it. This scholarship jacket was my only chance.
One day in May, I happened to overhear in the office Mr. Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr. Boone, my math teacher arguing about me. “I refuse to do it! I don’t care who her father is; her grades can’t match Martha’s at all. I won’t lie or falsify (伪造) records.” said Mr. Schmidt angrily.
But Mr. Boone’s voice sounded calm. “Joann’s father is not only on the Board (董事会), but he owns the only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and…”
The pounding in my ears drowned out the rest of the words, only a word here and there filtered through. “…Martha is Mexican…resign … won’t do it …”
To this day I don’t remember how I made it through the rest of the afternoon. That night, I cried into my pillow so Grandmother wouldn’t hear me.
The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There’s been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won’t cover the complete cost of the jacket. So, if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it will be given to the next one in line.”
Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said, “I’ll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” That day, I cried sadly on the walk home.

    Paragraph 1
By the time I got home, my eyes had been red and swollen. I found my grandpa in the bean field. His back bent into an arch and his face was drowned in sweats. I called him, in a choked voice. Sensing something wrong, he asked me what happened with great concern. I murmured the principal’s words, after which Grandfather fell silent, eyes rounding in disbelief. A surge of regret gnawing at my heart, I really hated to see my gray-haired Grandpa’s disappointment. Time ticking by, he heaved a long sigh, “My child, an award bought can’t be called an award.” I nodded understandingly. But who knew how reluctant and bitter I was?
    Paragraph 2
I dragged into the principal’s office the next day, sad and disappointed. I knew I might never get that jacket which represented my years of hard work and expectation. However, I tried to fight back the tears, with my head still lifted with dignity. “My grandpa…won’t pay the dollars. He said if I had to pay for it, then it wouldn’t be a scholarship jacket.” There was a deafening silence. The principal looked at me, biting his lip, as if thinking. Finally, after what seemed like a century, he decided that he would make an exception for me. I could hardly believe it. Looking into his eyes, which brimmed with smiles, I stood up and bowed low to him.
