What do you do at the end of the day when you’re finished with work? How you spend your free

time can have a big influence on your mental (精神的) health. Hobbies can help you relax and deal with

stress caused by all that time in the office or in front of the computer. But, interestingly, how you spend

your free time can also influence your work performance.

Researchers at the University of Sheffield’s Institute of Work Psychology in the UK found that

developing hobbies can develop your confidence about how well you perform your job. But your hobby

has to be quite different from what you do from 9 - to - 5 work.

To study the connection between work and hobbies, researchers studied 129 people who worked and were active in hobbies like rock climbing, musical theater and singing. They had them complete Surveys to see how serious and committed they were to their hobbies and how demanding their jobs were.Then, each month for seven months, participants were asked how many hours they spent on their hobbies and how they rated their ability to perform at work.

Researchers found that if people have hobbies similar to what they do at work and that they do in a very serious way, their on - the - job confidence can be lower. Its likely because their work and spare time have the same mental and physical needs, so they’re always feeling drained.

In contrast, people who have hobbies different from their work are happier and healthier. This is also true of those who choose a similar hobby but only do it in a happy and relaxing way. Those playful behaviors act as a wall between their professional and personal lives, giving them rest time to "recharge(给充电) their batteries", the researchers say.

"When we feel like we have the confidence to take on challenges in our jobs. We’re more likely to be able to build a sustainable job and remain healthy, productive, happy and employable over our lifetimes. Where does our food come from?

Once upon a time carrots were purple, there were no pineapples in Asia or lemons in America, and many people thought potatoes were poisonous（有毒的）. Many types of fruit and vegetable grew only in one place. So how did they spread all over the world?

Changing colors

Five thousand years ago, carrots only grew in Afghanistan and most were purple. Only a few were orange as they are today! Farmers in the Netherlands were looking for a fruit or vegetable to represent their king, William of Orange, and orange carrots were just what they were looking for—they became the ancestors（祖先）of all modem carrots.

At home in the mountains

As Brain entered Room No. 32 Peggy's face lit up with a bright smile. Peggy was Brain's little sister, and was dying of cancer. She was a lovely girl, and she seldom cried, though she was only 6 years old.

Chinese people are angry. Since March, some Western companies, including H&M and Nike, have come under the spotlight(受到关注). They said they will stop using cotton from Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

They said they are following industry requirements set by the Better Cotton Initiative(BCL 良好棉花发展协会). It is a Switzerland-based cotton organization with 2,100 members worldwide, including famous brands like Nike, Adidas and Burberry. Recently, the BCI said forced labor(强迫劳动) might be used in Xinjiang.

This is a complete lie, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The so-called “Xinjiang Uygur question” is nothing but way for the US to weaken China from the inside, said Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying on March 26.

In fact, China is protecting human rights in the region. The government has been organizing job offerings for cotton field owners in Xinjiang, as well as improving local people’s lives. The region’s cotton and textile(纺织) industry has created jobs for more than 600,000 local people. In 2020, the per capita disposable income(人均可支配收入) for residents(居民) living in cities and towns of Xinjiang was 34,838 yuan, 2.41 times that of 2010.

China is the world’s second-largest cotton producer and Xinjiang accounts for nearly 90 percent of the country’s cotton production. However, the increases in China’s cotton production and the growing textile industry are making some in the US and the West nervous.
