    Fultn entered Lndn sciety after he painted Benjamin Franklin’s prtrait. While abrad, Fultn left the arts fr a career in shipbuilding. Fultn’s visin was nt riginal; many thers had entered the field, and the unfrtunate inventr Jhn Fitch had built a wrking steamship already. But like Henry Frd, Fultn’s talent lay nt in the inventin but in the prduct’s applicatin in the marketplace.
    Fultn didn’t fcus entirely n the steambat. In 1804, he tested the first submarine successfully, which he had built fr the British Ryal Navy. His inventin wuld make him a celebrity upn his return t the United States tw years later. Fultn’s partner Rbert Livingstn btained an exclusive license fr steambat services n New Yrk’s Hudsn River. It was time fr Fultn t deliver.
    T build an efficient reliable steambat, Fultn used a special English steam engine. The ship’s bttm was flat and its stern was square. The steambat Clermnt made its debut(首次亮相)n August 17, 1807, steaming up the river frm New Yrk t Albany, and it sn entered cmmercial services.     It was Sunday, December 7,1941. As usual, the wake­up call came at 5:45 a.m. The men abard the warship USS Arizna stretched and rubbed their eyes. Seaman Russell Warriner was awakened by Quartermaster Luis Cnter. Russell made his bed and helped clean the huge, shared rm. The men went t the washrm, dressed in their unifrms and sat dwn t breakfast. It lked like it wuld be a nrmal day n bard the ship.
    But nbdy ate their breakfast: at that mment, there was a huge crashing sund frm abve. The ship shk vilently and the men lked at each ther in hrrr. Abve their heads, hundreds f Japanese planes circled like eagles. They were diving dwn t drp bmbs n Pearl Harbr. The scream f their engines was deafening. As bmbs thundered all arund, cluds f black smke rse int the sky and hung ver the sea. Russell felt his bld freeze, but he quickly came t himself and rushed up t the deck. Mments later, a bmb hit the USS Arizna and Russell was thrwn mre than 100 meters acrss the ship. He suffered serius burns n his hands, arms and legs, and watched many f his friends die.
    Luis meanwhile, als standing n the deck, was lucky nt t be thrwn int the sea. With nly minr injuries, he was able t help thers wh were severely burnt and in terrible pain. After receiving the rder t abandn ship, Luis saved mre men frm the water, dragging them int the lifebat. In the chas and cnfusin after the attack, the US Navy sent a message t his family that Luis had been killed in the attack. Luckily, he was able t get in tuch with them befre the message arrived. Despite his remarkable actins, Luis did nt think that he was a her. “The heres are the nes that gave their lives that day,” he said.
    Russell was saved frm the water but he was badly burnt, bleeding heavily. Frtunately, he was taken t hspital and survived. Fr many years, Russell refused t talk abut what happened that mrning, describing it simply as “hell”. His wife Elsa said, “When he pened up later n, he always mentined the hrrr f it.”
    Luis and Russell wuld never frget the terrible scene f the attack, but they were frtunate enugh t be amng the few survivrs frm the Arizna. Nbdy had expected the bmbing. Japan had hatched a plt t launch a surprise attack n Pearl Harbr, s the attack began withut warning and withut declaring war n the United States. The attack destryed nearly 20 American ships and ver 180 airplanes. In ttal, mre than 2,000 American peple were killed and ver 1,000 thers were wunded that day.     The surprise attack came as a great shck t the whle natin. The next day, President Rsevelt delivered his famus Pearl Harbr Speech, in which he described December 7 as “a date which will live in infamy” and asked that the US Cngress declare war n Japan. In respnse t the attack and the president’s address, the United States jined the Secnd Wrld War.
