Shopping is not as simple as you may think! Much has to be done for the producers before putting the products on the shelf. Color, for example, changes a lot according to what the producers are trying to sell. Health foods are packed in greens, yellows or browns because we think of these as healthy colors.

When some kind of medicine was brought out recently, researchers found that the color of the package(包装) caused the shoppers to lose interest because they made the product look ineffective(无效的). At last, it came on the market in dark blue and white—blue because we think of it as safe, and white as calm.

The size of a package can also attract(吸引) a shopper, although quite often a bottle doesn’t hold as much as it seems to.

In the winter of 1975, I visited Marineland(海洋世界) in Niagara Falls with my two children. As we were watching the seal training, I realized my daughter, Sue, had walked away. I followed her footprints in the snow for a bit and called out, “Sue, are you here?”

“Yes,” came the reply.

“What are you doing?” I called as I tried to follow the direction of her voice.

“I’m taking the whale for a walk.” answered Sue.

I finally found her with her hand pressed to the glass wall of a tank. Pressing back on the other side with its face was a large orca. It followed her as she walked to the other end of the tank, where they touched again through the glass. “He’s lonely, Mum.”
