    四、阅读理解

    A

Even thousands of years before the selfie (自拍) was invented, people were concerned with the image of themselves they presented to the world. The rulers of ancient Egypt had artists carve portraits of them to decorate their tombs and preserve their images even after death.

King Tutankhamen lived more than 3000 years ago. He ruled ancient Egypt for 10 years, until his death at age 19. “King Tut” remained practically unknown in the modern world until 1922, when scientists discovered his tomb, buried and forgotten for centuries. The treasures inside gave the world the first detailed picture of ancient Egyptian life.

The ancient Egyptians worshipped (崇拜) many gods. They also believed that all people had a life spirit, called ka that needed a place to live after the body died. Tombs inside huge pyramids protected the pharaohs (法老) ka. The ka could also exist in portrait sculptures like the one of a seated Hatshepsut. The wife of a pharaoh, Hatshepsut took on the role of king after her husband died. Carved from limestone, this Lifesize sculpture shows the life force of Hatshepsut’s ka. The artist suggests Hatshepsut’s strength by placing her feet firmly on the ground and resting her hands on her knees in a firm, powerful pose.

Viewers are meant to look at the sculpture of Hatshepsut from a frontal angle only. But artist Thutmose created his portrait of Queen Nefertiti as a sculpture in the round, meaning viewers should observe it from many points of view. The work is a highly realistic portrait of a queen who ruled beside her husband, a pharaoh. Painted with delicate (精细的) features, the impressive colors in her portrait resemble the makeup Nefertiti probably wore in life.

Long before any of these portraits were created, a huge creature with a lions body and a human head stood guarding in Egypts Valley of the Kings. No one knows who created the Great Sphinx, or why, but it is said to resemble an early pharaoh. Carved out of solid rock on a largerthanlife scale, it is possibly the oldest and most imposing portrait in the world.

If you have ever been disappointed because you dont have a good gardener, the clever robot may one day become the helper of your indoor plants.

The Hexa Plant is a sixlegged robot that has been specially made to care for the potted (盆栽的) plant that it carries on top of its head. Using light and heat sensors (传感器), the robot has the ability to carry its plant in and out of the daylight. If the houseplant needs more sun, the Hexa will walk into the sunlight; and if the houseplant is getting too hot, the Hexa will go back into the area that blocks direct light. The Hexa Plant will even do a little dance when it senses that the plant needs to be watered to warn its owner.

The robot was developed by Vincross engineer and founder Sun Tianqi after he saw a dead sunflower sitting in the darkness in a room back in 2014. Plants only receive an action without responding Sun Tianqi wrote in a blog post. Whether they are being cut, bitten, burned or pulled from the earth, or when they havent received enough sunshine, water, or are too hot or cold, they will hold still and take whatever is happening to them.

According to Sun Tianqi, for billions of years, plants have never experienced movement of any kind, not even the simplest movement. In their whole lives, they stick to where they were born. Sun Tianqi continued, Do they want to break their own settings or have a tendency (趋向) towards this? I do not know the answer, but I would love to try to share some of this human tendency and technology with plants. With the help of the robot, plants can experience the move.

The Hexa Plant model robots are not for sale, though Vincross does sell a Hexa robot model. It is said that in the near future the robots can open up a new market to watch over our household plants.

    5. What can we learn about the Hexa Plant?

    B. It waters the plants through dancing.

    C. It helps indoor plants get proper sunlight.

    D. It carries the potted plant with its hands.

    A. The way plants spend their whole lives.

    B. The common way people deal with plants.

    C. The difference between plants and humans.

    D. The cause of making the indoor plants helper.

    7. What does Sun Tianqi try to do using this technology?

    A. To develop gardening skills.

    B. To draw peoples attention to plants.

    C. To make plants experience move.

    D. To study the living conditions of plants.

    8. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. A New Market for Robots

    B. An Indoor Plants Helper

    C. An Important Development in Gardening

    D. The Tendency of Gardening in the Future

Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet,it also increases pollution and wastes energy and water.Only 23% of all plastic in America ends up in a recycling bin, meaning over $1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year.Recently,Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.

It is a convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunk or eaten. To drink it,you can either peel off the membrane(薄膜) or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it,you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. One problem the scientists have run into is how to ship lots of Ooho bubbles without arriving with a very wet truck. However, they have attempted to package units of individual bubbles together inside a larger and thicker membrane. It is targeting large outdoor events such as marathons, music festivals, and sporting events, where tons of plastic bottles are used, and frequently left behind as litter. And too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for their purpose of such a new invention.

The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials needed to produce Ooho; they have recently applied for a patent for their new advancement. The price for an individual bubble or a unit of bubbles has not been set yet,but they cost about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. It has appeared at events in London,San Francisco,Boston,at conferences, festivals, and so on.

Ooho is catching many peoples attention and has raised over $1 million and gained 1,000 investors in only three days.It is mostly being sold at events at the moment to keep the consumers interest when the production machine is running. It is quickly making a rise,so keep an eye out this year for these bottles of the future.

9.How is most plastic dealt with in America?

    A.Its sold.

    B.Its recycled.

    C.Its buried.

    D.Its wasted.

10.Why did the team invent Ooho?

    A.To make a profit for a company.

    B.To protect the environment.

C.To make people eat as they drink.

D.To reduce the cost of the plastic bottle.

11.What can we infer about Ooho from the text?

A.It is easy and safe to ship it in large amounts.

B.It has become popular since it began to be sold.

C.It might be sold at a lower price than plastic bottles.

D.It cost the team a lot of money to develop the technology.

12.What does the author really want to say in the last paragraph?

A.Ooho is to be a success in the future.

B.Ooho is being supported by smart people.

C.Ooho is taking the place of plastic bottles now.

D.Ooho is being produced to attract more investors.
