The small twn f Allen Crssing, Indiana, has been the place I’ve called hme fr all 16 years f my life. That’s where I spend hurs just 11 . Lking at hw the wind blws the wild flwers t create a magical 12 f clr. Lking at the way insects mve hurriedly amng plants. The beauty f nature has always been what 13 me t create art. I used t think that artists get inspiratin frm 14 . Then I went t New Yrk and smething happened that really made me 15 that idea.
I was ffered tw-week curses at an art cllege there. When I tk the train t the cllege fr the first time, I had sme serius 16 abut whether I had made the right chice abut cming. I was s used t the 17 cuntryside. New Yrk, hwever, was nisy and 18 . Peple pushed past me t squeeze thrugh the drs f the subway cars. Everything mved at such a 19 pace that I felt I had n time t prcess it all.
Art classes were anther stry. 20 I started making art, I felt like myself again. Wrking frm memry, I made a series f drawings f natural scenes. “Yur images are very 21 and accurate,” ne teacher tld me. “Why nt try using brighter clrs and blder shapes and mtins?” I fllwed her advice and was amazed at the 22 .
One day my cusin Ken came t see my drawings. “Gsh! These are great! They remind me f graffiti (涂鸦).” He exclaimed.
I lked at my drawings and was 23 .T me graffiti was nt art, it was
24 messy, unreadable writing n walls.
“Cl,” Ken cntinued. “If yu’re int art, yu shuld cme with me.” I fllwed him t a huge factry that was cmpletely 25 with graffiti. The walls were cvered with bright clrs, prtraits, wrds and calligraphy-like symbls. What I saw was art nt unlike what I had been making. The big 26 was that the artists drew images frm city life, such as crwded subway trains and tall, shiny buildings. In every sketch, there was a(n) 27 that reminded me f that first subway ride, nly it was a creative ne.
Nw I knw that 28 is different fr everyne. What drives ne persn crazy can be the thing that drives anther persn t 29 . I may nt lk at the city the way street artists d, but they may nt see nature the way I d. I 30 the way the city’s energy inspires them. And nw I use that energy wherever I am t create my wn art.

In industry and medicine, rbts rutinely build, break dwn and inspect things; they als assist in surgery and pharmacies. Neither they nr “scial” rbts—which are designed t engage with peple and t establish an emtinal cnnectin—behave like The Jetsns’ maid, Rsie, r ther belved rbts f fictin. Even s, expect scial rbts t becme mre cmplicated and ppular in the next few years.
Like mst rbts, scial rbts use artificial intelligence (AI) t decide hw t act n infrmatin received thrugh cameras and ther sensrs. The ability t respnd in ways that seem lifelike has been infrmed by research int such issues as hw perceptins (认知) frm, what cnstitutes scial and emtinal intelligence, and hw peple understand thers’ thughts and feelings. Advances in AI have enabled designers t translate such psychlgical and neurscientific (神经学的) insights int algrithms (演算) that allw rbts t recgnize vices, faces and emtins; interpret speech and gestures; respnd apprpriately t cmplex verbal and nnverbal cues; make eye cntact; speak cnversatinally; and adapt t peple’s needs by learning frm feedback, rewards and criticisms.
In cnsequence, scial rbts are filling an ever expanding variety f rles. A 47-inch humanid called Pepper (frm SftBank Rbtics), fr instance, recgnizes faces and basic human emtins and engages in cnversatins via a tuch screen in its “chest.” Abut 15,000 Peppers wrldwide perfrm such services as htel check-ins, airprt custmer service, shpping assistance and fast-fd checkut. Scial rbts have particular appeal fr assisting the wrld’s grwing elderly ppulatin. Japan’s PARO Therapeutic (治疗的) Rbt, which lks like a lvely seal (海豹), is meant t stimulate and reduce stress fr thse with Alzheimer’s disease and ther patients. Mabu (Catalia Health) engages patients, particularly the elderly, reminding them t take walks and medicatin. Scial rbts are als gaining ppularity with cnsumers as tys. Early attempts t incrprate scial behavir in tys, such as Hasbr’s Baby Alive and Sny’s AIBO rbtic dg, had limited success. But bth are resurging, and the mst recent versin f AIBO has cmplicated vice and gesture recgnitin, can be taught tricks and develps new behavirs based n previus interactins.
Wrldwide sales f cnsumer rbts reached an estimated $5.6 billin in 2018, and the market is expected t grw t $19 billin by the end f 2025. This trend may seem surprising given that multiple well-funded cnsumer rbt cmpanies, such as Jib and Anki, have failed. But a wave f rbts is lining up t take the place f defunct rbts, including BUDDY (Blue Frg Rbtics), a big-eyed mbile device that plays games in additin t acting as a persnal assistant and prviding hme autmatin and security.
    38. Paragraph 2 mainly tells us ________.
    A. what the features f scial rbts are
    B. what prmtes scial rbts’ engagement with peple
    C. hw algrithms are imprved t adapt t peple’s needs
    D. hw psychlgical and neurscientific insights are translated
    39. Accrding t Paragraph 3, scial rbts ________.
    A. have a wide range f applicatins
    B. have the ability t deal with emergencies
    C. have a tendency t take the place f humans
    D. have successfully gained psychlgical insight
    40. What can we learn frm the passage?
    A. Scial rbts are designed as persnal assistants.
    B. Rbts in industry and medicine need imprvement.
    C. Cnsumer rbts have been successful all these years.
    D. Scial rbts are ppular due t great interactive abilities.
    41. What is the purpse f the passage?
    A. T predict the prspect f scial rbts.
    B. T intrduce the advances f scial rbts.
    C. T reprt the applicatin f AI in scial rbts.
    D. T shw the influence f scial rbts n ur life.
    D
If yu think abut it, wrk-life balance is a strange ambitin fr a fulfilling life. Balance is abut stasis: if ur lives were ever in balance—parents happy, kids taken care f, wrk wrking—then ur verriding thught wuld be t shut “Nbdy mve!” and pray all wuld stay perfect frever. This false hpe is made wrse by the categries themselves. They imply that wrk is bad, and life is gd. And s the challenge, we are tld, is t balance the heaviness f wrk with the lightness f life.
Yet wrk is nt the ppsite f life. It is instead a part f life—just as family is, as are friends and cmmunity. All f these aspects f living have their share f uplifting mments and mments that drag us dwn. The same is true f wrk. Treat wrk the same way yu d life: by maximizing what yu lve.
We have interviewed several anesthesilgists (麻醉师) abut the thrills they feel in their jbs. One said he lved the thrill f hlding each patient hvering at that ne precise pint between life and death. Anther said she lved the bedside cnversatins befre the peratin aiming t calm the panic that affects many patients. Anther was drawn mstly t the anesthetic mechanism and has devted himself t defining precisely hw each drug des what it des.
Think f yur life’s many different activities as threads. Sme are black and sme are white. But sme f these activities appear t be made f a different substance. These activities cntain all the tell-tale signs f lve: befre yu d them, yu find yurself lking frward t them; while yu’re ding them, time speeds up and yu find yurself in flw; and after yu’ve dne them, yu feel energetic. These are yur red threads, and research by the May Clinic suggests that dctrs wh weave the fabric f their life with at least 20% red threads are significantly less likely t experience burnut.
The simplest way fr yu t d this is t spend a week in lve with yur jb. During the week, any time yu find yurself feeling ne f the signs f lve write dwn exactly what yu were ding in the clumn “Lve”. And any time yu find yurself feeling the inverse write dwn what yu were ding in the clumn “Lathe”. By the end f the week yu will see a list f activities in yur “Lve” clumn, which create in yu a psitive feeling, ne that draws yu in and lifts yu up.
Our gal shuld be t, little by little, week by week, intentinally unbalance all aspects f ur wrk tward the frmer and away frm the latter. Nt simply t make us feel better, but s that ur clleagues, ur friends and ur family can all benefit frm us at ur very best.
    42. What is the authr’s attitude twards wrk-life balance?
    A. Dubtful.B. Disapprving.C. Supprtive.D. Neutral.
    43. The authr uses three anesthesilgists as examples t ________.
    A. prve peple benefit frm wrk
    B. indicate dctrs take pride in their wrk
    C. shw peple gain jy frm different situatins
    D. imply dctrs reduce the pressure f wrk successfully
    44. “Red threads” in Paragraph 4 refer t the activities that ________.
    A. aruse yur passinB. satisfy yur desires
    C. imprve yur mtivatinD. require yur effrts
    45. Which f the fllwing des the authr prbably agree with?
    A. Red threads are necessary fr a balanced life.
    B. Recrding activities helps create psitive feeling.
    C. Find lve in wrk instead f keeping wrk-life balance.
    D. Maximize what yu lve t remve the heaviness frm wrk.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Fr serius birders wh regularly bserve birds in the wild, ignring climate change isn’t pssible. We have been seeing and dcumenting the effects f a warming climate since at least the 1950s.
46 Glssy black great-tailed grackles (美洲黑羽椋鸟), fr example, previusly fund primarily in the trpics (热带), first reached sutheastern Califrnia in 1964. They are nw fund thrughut mst f the state.
New research frm the Natinal Audubn Sciety highlights the dangers f the trend. Fr its new reprt, “Survival by Degrees,” Audubn scientists analyzed the current gegraphic ranges f 604 Nrth American bird species, and mdeled hw thse ranges wuld change at different levels f warming. At a glbal temperature rise f three degrees Celsius, they fund that 389 f thse species—r nearly tw-thirds f thse studied—wuld becme endangered, lsing much f their current habitat. 47
Why des this matter t anyne wh’s nt a bird watcher? Fr ne thing, birds play a crucial rle in the eclgy, keeping dwn insect ppulatins and serving as fd themselves fr larger predatrs (食肉动物). 48 Their shifting ranges warn f increasing drughts, flds, fires, rising seas and unlivable cities.
49 Audubn scientists mdeled what wuld happen at lesser levels f warming, and the results are striking. Limiting warming t 1.5 degrees wuld reduce the danger fr three-quarters f thse threatened birds. Audubn’s reprt “Survival by Degrees” is nt a depressing frecast but rather a call t actin. It stresses the need fr actin at every level, by individuals and gvernments alike, t reduce greenhuse gas emissins.
As a lifelng birder, I’m prud f the rle my tribe has played in dcumenting the effects f climate change. When lcal cnditins change, particular types f frgs r wildflwers may decrease and disappear, few will ntice. 50 I hpe peple can pay clse attentin t the urgent message in this new reprt and wrk tgether fr slutins. Birds tell us we dn’t have time t wait.
    A. We still have time t d smething abut it, hwever.
    B. But they als serve as a visible symbl f brader envirnmental shifts.
    C. This wuld greatly benefit humans, reducing the ptential suffering fr peple.
    D. But when a bird species disappears, we dedicated birders dcument the change.
    E. In recent decades, that has meant a cnsistent nrthward shift in where species are fund.
    F. The changes will make birding exciting, with birders finding new species in unexpected places.
    G. Even if sme culd shift their range nrthward, they wuld sn start t run ut f rm n the map.

We were amazed at the magic f technlgy and culdn’t wait t give it a try. Our grup first designed a 3D mdel f a bike and then perated the printer as instructed. Watching the bike gradually taking shape, we felt excited. When all ur wrks were displayed n the table, we admired them and sme tk phts t recrd this unfrgettable experience.
