    51. Directions : Read the following passage . Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Youth in the 21st Century

It seems that everyone is talking negatively about the "Youth of today", Every TV programme the subject shows threatening young people . It is hard to find anything that shows young people in a positive light .

In this country we think the elderly suffer the greatest discrimination, but read any of the reports written on youth discrimination and anyone can see that young people are probably the largest group in society to be discriminated against. A recent survey undertaken by the Children's Rights Alliance for England (CRAE) shows that 49% of the 7 to 17-year-olds surveyed have experienced unfair treatment because of their age. Around a quarter of them say they are treated unfairly during everyday activities. Shopkeepers routinely follow them around the shop or exclude them, bus drivers won't stop for them and when they are in groups, the police order them to move on.

All of the young people I know are aware that modern society treats them unfairly . I've got two sons, aged 14 and 16, and both of them have been stopped from entering shops with their friends because there is a policy of only allowing two youths' in the shop at one time. Neither of them have a record of unruly behaviour and they hate the implication that all young people are potential thieves . I don't think either of my boys deserve such treatment - and from what they say none of their friends do either.

There are more than 11 million under-18-year-olds in England and evidence shows that the vast majority positively participate within their communities, contributing to the arts, sports and achieving well at school. However, no TV programmes report that! Barbara Heam, Deputy Chief Executive of the National Children's Bureau, rightly says, Equality is for everyone, including for our youngest citizens.

    IV. Summary Writing

    51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words.Use your own words as far as possible.

Have you ever heard your own voice played back? Other people hear us differently from how we hear ourselves. The same is true of how we see ourselves. Each of us has a different self-concept. Our self-concept is the view you have of yourself. It may or may not mirror the way other people view you. This much is clear. Having a positive self-concept is an important part of good mental health.

Your self-concept starts forming when you are very young. Parents or guardians are the first and greatest influence. How they speak to you and treat you have a lasting effect. Grandparents sisters, brothers, and relatives have an effect too.Your skills and abilities also shape your self-concept. You may see yourself as a good basketball player or a good singer. You may feel you are good at writing stories but average in math. How you view your talents and abilities influences your overall self-concept.

Developing a positive self-concept is an important part of emotional health.Focus on your strengths rather than your weaknesses. When you focus on your weaknesses, you may begin to feel that you are not good at anything. Instead, identify what you do well and what you enjoy doing This will help you develop a positive self-concept. Seeing yourself in a positive way will help you feel good about yourself.

Family members, friends, and teachers reinforce,or support your self-concept through messages. Some of the messages from people around you are spoken or written. Others take the form of looks or gestures."Way to go!" is an example of a positive word message. You may think you did well on a school project. Having your Parent or teacher tell you that you did a good job reinforces your belief.Keep in mind that sending positive messages is a two-way street. When you support others, they are likely to support you, too.

    IV. Summary Writing

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Much time and effort has been devoted to researching the mental health benefits of flexible work environments, but can the ability to leave work early to watch your son’s soccer game, or arrive at the office a bit later in the morning in order to see to some personal matters, have physical health benefits besides making you feel a bit relaxed?

According to new research published in the Cochrane Library Database of Systematic Reviews, it seems so. In a review of 10 previous studies examining the health effects of unfixed work conditions for more than 16,000 people, researchers from the U.K.. Durham University and University of Newcastle, as well as the University of Montreal, found that flexible work schedules, for instance, when employees can shift their starting times, were associated with improvements in a person’s overall health. In addition, perhaps, unsurprisingly, in all of the studies included in the review, researchers found no evidence for negative effects of more flexible work schedules.

This initial analysis was intended to throw light on the potential health benefits of flexible work options, which are increasingly popular throughout Scandinavia, and have recently gained some ground in the U.K. For example, last April, the British government implemented a policy that allowed parents of children aged six and under to request flexible work arrangements to include parents of children aged 16 and younger. In the U.S., the phenomenon is a bit slower to catch on. Yet, the economic slowdown of recent years may have contributed to growth in workplace flexibility—as companies unable to reward employees with bonuses or raises may turn to other forms of compensation, Reuters reported early last year.

Original analysis too, of course, indicated the benefits of flexible work environments toward positive mental health outcomes. And while these latest findings are promising, the researchers stress that more study is vital to understanding the detailed relationship between flexible work and improved health outcomes. To truly grasp the benefits of flexible working conditions, the researchers say, additional study analyzing health outcomes among a wide range of workers—from high-ranking executives to hourly employees – is critical, which helps to gain a deeper understanding of the issue, and to shape future workplace policy.

    IV. Summary Writing 10'

    51. Directions:Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more than 60words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Pushing Back School Starting Times

It's January. The outdoor temperature has fallen below 5C in the morning. Have you ever complained that you still have to get up at 6 a. m. and arrive at school before 7 am? Do you wish you could have a long nice lie-in?

You are not alone if your answer is "Yes!" In the United States, many high school students are unhappy with their school starting times, too.

That may soon change. Last October, Gavin Newsom, California's governor, signed a law that sets a limit on starting times of half-past eight for high-schoolers and eight o'clock for middle schoolers, hoping students will benefit form their extra time in bed.

Sleep deprivation is associated with problems in attention, behavior and learning. A research review by the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(C. D. C. )fids that later school starting times can lead to less falling asleep in class. The change can also help improve students' attendance and grades.

Many parents, however, are strongly opposed to such changes. Those who cannot start work

later say they won't be able to drop their children off at school before they go to work, They also fear that later starting times will mean later ending times, resulting in fewer opportunities for their children to take part in after-school activities, hold part-time jobs and care for younger siblings.

Supporters argue that there really is no significant reason not to do this. Anthony Portantino,

the California senator who introduced the law, believes evidence of the change's benefits will soon win over opponents, He says, "I only see an overwhelming resistance to the change from adults—something many teenagers will be familiar with. "

    Heighten Your Appreciation of Music

Music is such a fundamental part of human culture that it likely predates literacy the invention of the wheel, and even the musical note itself. While people generally know what kind of music they like-and what they don’t -it's possible to expand your appreciation by learning new ways to listen. Here are some tips for cultivating sensitive awareness of musical elements.

You might feel frightened picking up a guitar or sitting down at a piano-but learning an instrument can help you better understand how a song comes together and what role a specific type of sound plays in the composition. Moreover, the movement and effort of a live performance can often focus your attention on parts of a song you may have otherwise missed. So the next time you hear a song - particularly a classical arrangement--try to imagine it being performed. Or, try to picture a scene (a thunderstorm, a race) that best fits the mood and tempo (节奏) of piece.

It's certainly not necessary to grab your favorite musician’s biography in order to appreciate a good simple song. but it may help you better understand he context in which she wrote the lyrics or recorded a track. Researching backgrounds can also lead you to discover social and political influences at the time the music was created.

It could be hard to appreciate a warm day unless you’ve spent a winter freezing. Likewise, listening to music requires contrast that helps you better understand how organized and harmonious it can be. Listen to - don't just hear--common, everyday noises. While some may be irritating, others may have a melody all their own. Either way, you'll return to a piece of music with a new respect for a focused, deliberate bit of sound.
