    Lngji Rice Terraces
    Imagine muntains wrapped in silver water, shining in the spring sun. Summer sees the muntains turn bright green with grwing rice. During autumn, these same muntains are gld, and in winter they are cvered in sheets f white frst. These are the clurs f the Lngji Rice Terraces. These terraces were built by the lcal Zhuang and Ya peple, (1) t whm Guangxi is hme. (2) Starting in the Yuan Dynasty, wrk n the terraces tk hundreds f years, until its cmpletin in the early Qing Dynasty. Reaching as far as the eye can see, these terraces cver tall muntains, ften frm the bttm t the very tp.
    S why did these peple g t s much truble t turn the entire muntains int terraces? Firstly, there are few large, flat areas f land in the regin. Building the terraces therefre meant (3) that they culd increase the areas in which they culd grw rice. Secndly, (4) althugh the regin has plenty f rain, the muntains are steep and the sil is shallw. The flat terraces catch the rainwater and prevent the sil frm being washed away.
    But perhaps (5) what is mst significant is the way in which peple have wrked in harmny with nature t make these terraces and grw rice. The terraces are cleverly designed, with hundreds f waterways that cnnect with each ther. During the rainy seasn, (6) it is alng these waterways that rainwater mves dwn the muntains and int the terraces. The sun heats the water and turns it int vapur.
