Thousands of encouraging roadside signs have been planted around the worldand it's all thanks to one woman who felt helpless in the face of mental illness.

Amy Wolff was first encouraged to start planting the encouraging signs after she had a heartbreaking discussion with a friend in May 2017. "We were hanging out with friends when one of them mentioned the growing number of people trying to kill themselves in our community," says Wolff. "I wasn't a doctor. I didn't know of anyone suffering from thoughts of self-harm. What could I do?"

Then Wolff got the idea to start planting encouraging signs in people's yards. For the following two weeks, she and her kids started knocking on people's doors across their town of Newburg, Oregon and asking if they could put up signs with messages like "Don't Give Up" and "Your Mistakes Don't Define You".

Wolff then started receiving messages from other people in the community wanting to buy the signs. Within a few days, Wolff had sold over 150 of the yard signs. That night, Wolff's husband created a website to sell the signs.

"Within a year, we had news media in Dallas, Boston, Massachusetts, and Portland cover our movement," she added. By the fall of 2018, Wolff set up the Don't Give Up organization for her signs. Since she planted her first sign two years ago, she has shipped the organization's messages of encouragement to all 50 US states and 26 countries in 6 languages.

With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, the messages that Wolff has received from sign owners are meaningful. One message from Frank reads: "I just had a woman knock on my door. She began to cry and thank me for the signs in my yard. Her son had tried to kill himself and these signs were in the yard the day they came home from the hospital."

    24. What led to Amy Wolff taking action to help people with mental illness?

    A. Her friend's suggestions.

    B. The things done by Don't Give Up.

    C. Her own experience of fighting against mental illness.

    D. The increasing self-killing events in her community.

    25. What did Wolff do to help people with mental illness?

    A. She raised money for people in need.

    B. She attended courses to become a doctor.

    C. She asked people to put up encouraging signs.

    D. She visited people and encouraged them in person.

    26. Why did the woman visit Frank?

    A. To say thank you to him.             B. To ask him the way to hospital.

    C. To call for help in saving her son.      D. To ask about the signs in his yard.

    27. Which words can best describe Wolf?

    A. Honest and hard-working.       B. Creative and warm-hearted.

    C. Humorous and easy-going.      D. Cheerful and strong-minded.

    C

The US government has come out with new advice for Americans about how much exercise they should get each week.

In 2008, the US government came out with its first set of exercise advice, called Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The guidelines were based on research by scientists into how people could stay healthy by being active.

Since 2008, scientists have learned more about how helpful exercise is. For example, they've learned that being active can make it much less likely that someone will suffer from illnesses. Exercise also makes people worry less, sleep better, and makes their brains work better. So, now, ten years later, after the government has studied the findings, they've come up with a new set of guidelines.

Much of the advice is the same as it was in 2008, but there are a few changes. One change is that the government has added activity guidelines for children aged 3 to 5. This was not included in 2008, because younger children were usually very active then. But now, as young children spend more time looking at screens, they are moving less. The government says that children between 3 and 5 should have at least three hours of active play a day.

For children aged 6 to 17, the guidelines have not changed much since 2008. The government says they should get at least an hour of medium to very active movement every day. Most of these activities should be strong enough to raise the heart rate. Children should also do activities that build muscles at least three times a week.

In 2008, the government said that adults should get at least 150 to 300 minutes of medium strength activity every week. But only 20% of Americans actually move that much. Now based on new scientific findings, the government says that even short periods of movement that raise the heart rate are helpful.

The government is starting a program called "Move Your Way", which it hopes will help encourage Americans to get healthier by meeting these movement goals.

    28. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?

    A. How exercise is related to health.          B. The ways people prevent illnesses.

    C. The advantages of the new guidelines.      D. Why the new guidelines have been put out.

    29. Why does the government add exercise guidelines for kids aged 3 to 5?

    A. They do fewer activities than before.       B. To take up scientists suggestions.

    C. To meet parents' requirements.            D. They are more likely to get ill.

    30. What change do the new guidelines make for adults?

    A. What activities they should do.           B. How long they should exercise.

    C. How often they should do activities       D. How strong their exercise should be.

    31. Who need to exercise most every day according to the new guidelines?

    A. Teenagers.      B. The elderly.      C. Preschool children.      D. The middle-aged.

    D

Taking risks is a way of teaching yourself bravery, and stepping outside of your comfort zone to do something that frightens you can make you feel empowered-even if you don't get it right the first time. That's why extreme sports are perfect for teens.

"I've been snowboarding(滑板滑雪)since I was 9 years old. Snowboarding for hours a day helped me get an understanding of the way my body works. Snowboarding taught me how to push myself, especially when I feel fearful." said Sophie Dolan, a high school senior in New York. "All sports, especially extreme ones, keep you in great shape. They also introduce you to a positive community of people who share the same interests and are always willing to help you to be better. Even the best extreme athletes get hurt sometimes, but fear of injury shouldn't stop teens from joining in a sport they enjoy.

Some people say it is good for teens to take risks, but taking part in extreme sports goes beyond what is healthy and safe.

"Maturity and stability are necessary when choosing to take a risk, and most teens haven't had those. Because the decision-making part of our brain isn't fully grown, we're likely to take risks without thinking. So it is important that we learn to take responsibility for our bodies and to stop and consider what might go wrong. During the teen years, our bodies are still maturing, so an injury from extreme sports could hurt our bodies," said Zev Mayer, also a high school senior in New York. "But the lasing influences of a bad fall aren't the only reasons to avoid extreme sports; injuries can keep teens out of school for weeks, setting students back and possibly stopping them from progressing to the next grade on time. Injuries can also stop teens from further joining in sports and fun school activities."

    32. What does Sophie Dolan learn from snowboarding?

    A. Being willing to help others.          B. Fighting against fear.

    C. Trying hard to do what she loves.      D. Getting along with her friends.

    33. What does Zev Mayer think of teens doing extreme sports?

    A. He is against it.         B. He is hopeful of it.

    C. He is surprised at it.      D. He is uncertain about it.

    34. What does Zev Mayer advise teens to do?

    A. To prove themselves to others.        B. To take part in school activities.

    C. To think twice about their choice.      D. To give others positive influences.

    35. What is the text mainly about?

    A. How to avoid injuries when doing extreme sports.

    B. Whether doing sports after school is good for students.

    C. What safe sports teens should do.

    D. Whether teens should do extreme sports.

    第二节(5小题;每小题2分,满分10)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Most people can study almost anywhere-if the subject attracts them.   36   Therefore, your study area should be as free as possible of noise and visual distractions(使人分心的事). On the other hand, what distracts one person may not affect another. Some students feel they can study better with soft music in the background.   37   Find out what distracts you and remove it from your study area.

Students should study regularly throughout the school year.   38   Never wait until just before an exam to start reviewing the work for the entire period to be covered by the test. Anything you learn by such cramming(临时死记硬背)is usually soon forgotten.

You may find it helpful to plan a weekly study schedule. Many students write down the times they are in school or are involved with other activities.   39   It is easier to keep up with your schoolwork if you have the habit of studying at the same time daily. Two points to consider in developing a study schedule are the best time of day for studying and the length of each session.

The best time of day for studying depends on your personal preferences, the kind of life you lead and your family situation.   40   Others have a job or participate in sports and other activities after school, and so they study in the early evening. Some students study late at night, or in the morning before school, because their home is too noisy early in the evening.

    A. They then set aside a certain time each day for study.

    B. However, others cannot study effectively with music playing.

    C. You can use these suggestions to improve your grades at school.

    D. Many students prefer to study immediately after arriving home from school.

    E. But they have difficulty concentrating on something they consider uninteresting.

    F. You cannot study effectively unless you understand what you are supposed to accomplish.

    G. You will remember more about a subject if you study it soon after it has been presented in class.
