When it conies to shepherds, people usually think of men or boys. That's because the sheep have typically been watched by men, but now that is changing. A new school to train women to be shepherds is opening in Spain.
The aim for the school isn't just about gender equality by giving women a job, but it's also about reviving the countryside. Many small towns are becoming depopulated as more young people are going to the cities. Women have been abandoning the countryside in greater numbers than men and the population is aging. Many towns are taking measures to attract new residents' but few of them focused only on women.
While there are other shepherd schools that accept women, the new school is different because it is being run through a woman's perspective(角度).They also have to care for their family during their work. "That's why we're talking about work-life balance, creating networks of each other's support and cooperation,“ said Susana Pacheco, the organizer of the school.
The course will run for nine months and include nearly 500 hours of online training and an additional weekend a month of training in Cantabria--a mountainous area of the country.
While shepherding is a traditional job, the school will use the latest technological advances to track the sheep. There are also hands-on training classes that include beekeeping, cheese making, and eco-tourism that will allow the women a chance for extra income.
While the idea of a school separated by sex has not been fully accepted, Pacheco said that the condition in some villages is terrible with 149 seniors for every 100 children. "If we want generational change, women are fundamental," she said. "We see this school as a social transformation project-we want to empower women and respect, this work."
    24. What problem is the Spanish countryside facing?
    A. Men don't like herding the sheep. B. Women know little about shepherds.
    C. Its population is becoming smaller. D. Its sheep are always unattended.
    25. Why is the new school different from other shepherd ones?
    A. It aimed to help the unemployed women.
    B. It puts women's priorities in the first place.
    C. It encourages men's support for their wives.
    D. It offers courses in farming for nine months.
    26. Why are hands-on training classes held in the new school?
    A. To increase the popularity of these courses.
    B. To better the women's ability to watch sheep.
    C. To improve the businesses in the countryside.
    D. To teach the women skills to earn more money.
    27. What does Pacheco say about the new school in the last paragraph?
    A. It will change the population structure. B. It will not be welcomed by men.
    C. It will lead to a cultural transformation. D. It shows the problems women are facing.
    C
Las Vegas city in Nevada is built in a desert. The city may be known to the outside world for its partying. But officials have found that there are 21 square kilometers of useless grass. The grass is never laid on, played on or even stepped on. The grass is only there to look nice.
Now, the city is asking the Nevada state legislature to ban useless grass. It is trying to become the first place in America to ban that kind of grass often seen between streets, in housing developments and in office parks.
It is estimated that useless grass makes up 40% of all the grass in Las Vegas and it needs a lot of water to survive. Grass needs four times more water than dry climate plants like cactus. By tearing out the grass, the city could reduce yearly water usage by 15%.
In 2003, the Southern Nevada Water Authority banned developers from planting grass in front of new homes. It also offered homeowners $ 30 for each square meter of grass they tear out. But fewer people are now using the program. Water usage has increased in southern Nevada by 9% since 2019. And last year, Las Vegas went a record 240 days without major rainfall. The Colorado River provides much of Nevada's drinking water. The river could lose more water as climate change affects it.
Water officials in other dry cities said water usage needs to be reduced. But they fear the reaction to reforms like the ones in Las Vegas if their communities do not accept them. Cynthia Campbell is the water resources adviser for the city of Phoenix in Arizona. "There might come a point when city restrictions get too severe for some residents. They'll say that is the point of no return for them," Campbell said. "For some people, it's a pool. For some people, it's grass."
    28. Why does Las Vegas city try to ban useless grass?
    A. To protect the local people. B. To beautify the city.
    C. To reduce water usage. D. To reduce waste.
    29. What program was carried out in Las Vegas in 2003?
    A. Allowing planting grass before new houses.
    B. Encouraging the residents to tear out grass.
    C. Praising those who signed on the program.
    D. Awarding those who reduced water usage.
    30. What is implied in Campbell's words in the last paragraph?
    A. Many residents won't follow the ban.
    B. Reaction to the reform will vary personally.
    C. Other measures should be taken to protect wetter.
    D. Water officials should take many factors into account.
    31. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Las Vegas Plans to Ban Useless Grass B. A Method Is Adopted to Save Las Vegas
    C. Choices between Beauty and Practice D. Grass Is Important but Useless in Las Vegas
    D
"Heavy hearts, like heavy clouds in the sky, are best relieved by the letting of a little water, the French writer Antoine de Rivarol wrote. This love letter to the cleansing beauty of a good cry is a comforting thought at a time when the continuing stress of the COVID-19 has added heaviness to each of our lives.
Scientifically, de Rivarol's poetic image doesn't, if you'll forgive the words used in the poem, hold water. There's limited research on crying, partly because of the difficulty of copying the behavior of real crying in a lab. But even within the previous studies, there's little evidence to suggest that crying provides a physiological cleansing of poisons in people's body.
Psychologists believe the relief of a good cry connects with a different emotional process. seems that crying occurs just after the peak of the emotional experience, and crying is associated with this return to homeostasis: the process of maintaining a stable psychological state, said Lauren Bylsma. He also said holding back tears can have negative physical consequences, including headaches and muscle tension. Such restriction can also limit our experiences of joy, gratitude and other positive emotions if we avoid acknowledging our feelings.
For me, crying has been easier said than done during the COVID-19. Psychologists say it's normal to feel stopped up by the stresses of the past year. We should find opportunities to release and process our emotions.
Watching a tear-jerking movie, having an emotional conversation with a close friend, and writing in a journal are healthy ways to elicit a cry. Physical activity like light-footed walking or even dancing can also signal our bodies to release some emotional tightness. We can then open up to the flow of feelings that leave us feeling lighter and refreshed-like a clear sky after a soaking rain.
    32. What is the weakness of the studies ever done on crying?
    A. They were clone in a laboratory setting.
    B. They cared little about different forms of crying.
    C. They were always concentrated on people's daily life.
    D. They showed little about the positive physical effect of crying.
    33. What is the function of crying according to Lauren Bylsma?
    A. Curing people of their diseases. B. Keeping emotionally balanced.
    C. Producing negative mental results. D. Expanding people's experience of joy.
    34. What does the underlined word "elicit" in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Produce. B. Postpone. C. Control. D. Repeat.
    35. What are people advised to do according to the text?
    A. Learn to hold back their tears wisely. B. Share their emotion with their colleagues.
    C. Have a good cry when necessary. D. Try to avoid admitting our feelings.

Usually in school or in clubs, children are told not to horse around or act badly. But in south London, there is a club that loves it when students horse around. The club is called the Ebony Horse Club, a riding school for children from poor families. With the help of volunteers, they give about 140 rides each week to children. 36 .
The club recently reopened its stables (马棚). They were closed for months because of the COVID-19. 37 After their return, young riders began by learning how to get on the horses, how to walk and how to control the horses.
One of the club's youngest riders is Shaddai. 38 He rides after school. But he joins the team on Sundays to help in the yard. He gets great satisfaction by taking care of the horses: cleaning out the stables, grooming the horses, and measuring out their evening meals. Shaddai recently received his first award for grooming.
Along with riding close to home, the club members take day trips to other clubs in the countryside. Before the pandemic, groups of children from the club had wonderful experiences. 39 Several students who finished the program have found jobs in the horse industry.
40 But it needs donations to survive. The cost of riding is based on the riders' situation at home. But like other organizations, the club may experience money problems. Now, the club plans to continue to raise money “to not just maintain but grow their activities".

Could you survive for a few days without your smartphone or without being connected to the Internet? How about living in a cave 56 no modern equipment for 40 days? Fifteen people did just that. They took part in a project 57 (call) Deep Time to see how they would react to and cope with being 58 (total) disconnected from the modern world. Scientists wanted to understand how people would adapt to huge changes in living conditions. They put the volunteers in 59 cave for nearly six weeks. There was no sunlight and 60 (participant) had no contact with the outside world. They had to rely on their body clock 61 (know) when to wake up, go to sleep and eat.
Most of the volunteers said they enjoyed the experience of total isolation. Two-thirds expressed a desire to remain underground a while 62 (long) in order to finish projects they had started. Deep Time's director Christian Clot said the experience would test humans' 63 (able) to adapt to the loss of their frame of reference for time and space. One striking observation is 64 they lost their sense of time. Mr. Clot said that they 65 (walk) into the cave 30 days before in their heads. Joan MacDonald is 75 years old this year. She started hitting the gym on a regular basis just a few years ago at the age of 70.
Back then, Joan was out of shape and at a low point in her life. She was dealing with added pounds and a trip to the doctor only confirmed her fears that her health was on the decline. Worse still, the treatments given by her doctor weren't working well. Her blood pressure was still high, and she also had kidney (肾) problems. After a tough conversation with her daughter who is a personal trainer, Joan knew she needed to be the one to make a change. So she began to work out at once.
In January, 2017, she flew down to Mexico. There her daughter was hosting a kind of camp for women like her, who hoped to lose some weight and feel their best. It was there that she learned how to document her journey on Instagram. It was very tiring at the beginning because she had to learn the skills as well as doing something challenging with her body. She had to learn how to eat properly, how many meals to eat, and how to do her exercises, hoping that she got them done right.
It was especially difficult, because while Joan was dealing with all of the physical diseases that result from aging, she was also fighting against a generational mindset, one that didn't look at exercise and eating healthily the same way we do now.
She managed to stay active all these years by chasing after her children, taking care of her family and prioritizing everyone else's needs above her own. But when her kids grew up, Joan didn't have many hobbies that got her up and moving. Therefore, sharing her fitness photos on Instagram became that hobby.
    注意:
    1.写作词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Joan has 1.3 million fans on Facebook.

So far, hitting the gym regularly has benefited Joan a lot.

    Dear Linda,
I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t perform well in the Chinese Speech Competition and that you are feeling discouraged.
Anyhow, as an exchange student, you have tried your best. As the proverb goes, failure is the mother of success. Facing failure, you shouldn’t feel sad and lose heart. On the contrary, you should analyze the cause of your failure. As far as I’m concerned, you’re not well prepared for it and you need more time to practice more.
If you want to practice, I am willing to work as a tutor to help you improve it.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    Text 4
W: I’m sorry to keep you waiting.
M: Don’t mention it. I’ve been here for only a few minutes.
W: Will we be late for the movie?
M: No. We have enough time for dinner. Here is the menu.
    Text 5
W: Your sister Kate is sleeping in bed. Don’t wake her up, Jim!

W: Don’t worry. I am helping your dad get ready for work. Then you and I will hang out together outside.
    Text 6
M: Hello, Lucy. Tina is going to the concert tonight. Are you going with her?
    W: I’d love to, but I can’t.
M: I’ve heard that you are into concerts! Why don’t you go?
W: My mother thinks I spend too much money on the tickets.
M: Well, I’m not planning to go, either. What about seeing a movie together?
W: We can also go to the gym after the movie. And I’ll ask my father to pick us up.
M: Sounds great. Let’s make it at 7:00 tonight. The film will be on at 7:30.
    W: OK. See you then.
    Text 7
M: Is that Betty speaking? This is Dennis.
W: Hello, Dennis? Is everything going well?
M: Not very well. That is why I’m calling you. We’ve made an appointment that we’re going to play badminton this afternoon.
W: Yes, I have booked the badminton court. What’s wrong?
M: I’m afraid that I can’t make it, Betty. I’ve got a cough. It is windy today and I don’t want to risk getting worse. I’ve got an important meeting tomorrow. So, we’ll have to cancel it.

W: Congratulations! Have you received offers from other universities?
M: Yeah. I’ve been accepted by Cambridge University and Sydney University.
W: Sounds wonderful. I know that the cost of living and studying is the lowest in Australia. However, if you decide to study in Harvard University, you’ll probably be able to get any job you want in the future.

W: I think you can apply for some scholarships before you decide. Whatever you do, I know you’ll succeed.

M: Is there a recall? I can’t live a day without the car.
W: But, darling. It isn’t about that.
M: What is it this time? The wheels need replacing? They found that a part of the engine might make it explode?
W: Darling, hold on. It’s not what you think. This time, it’s actually good news. The Tesla Company says that they’re going to test their self-driving cars later this year.
    M: So what?
W: The cars will drive all the way from California to New York.
M: That’s not much news. Google did that several years ago. Other companies like Delphi have done the same thing successfully.
    W: You got it.
M: So what does it have to do with our car?
W: The notice says that when their testing is all done, all Tesla owners will be able to have a self-driving car, too. The company will just update the software for our car’s computer.
M: Wow, that sounds great news!
    Text 10
The government in the United Kingdom wants to change its farming industry. It wants younger people to do farming work. It has a new plan to pay older farmers to retire. Some older farmers could get up to $140,000 in cash if they retire. The reason the government wants older farmers to retire is to protect the environment. Older farmers use more traditional methods to farm their land. The UK’s farming minister believes younger farmers are more open to green methods.
The average age of farmers in the UK is 59. Around 40 percent of them are above the age of 65. The minister said: “We need to address the challenges of helping new farmers realize their dream of gaining access to land, while also helping an older generation to retire with dignity.” The plan is popular with many old farmers. A farmers’ association said 75 percent of its farmers were interested in the retirement plan. The UK’s National Farmers’ Union welcomed the government’s plan. It said: “We want to see this fair change. Farmers who are considering leaving the industry have enough time and information to make their decisions.”
