As a third generation native of Brownsville, Texas, Mildred Garza never pleased move away. That was four years ago. Today all three generations regard the move to a success, giving them a closer relationship than they would have had in separate cities.
No statistics show the number of grandparents like Garza who are moving closer to the children and grandchildren. Yet there is evidence suggesting that the trend is growing. Even President Obama’s mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, has agreed to leave Chicago and into the White House to help care for her granddaughters. According to a study grandparents com. 83 percent of the people said Mrs. Robinson ‘s decision will influence the grandparents in the American family. Two-thirds believe more families will follow the example of Obama’s family.
“In the 1960s we were all a little wild and couldn’t get away from home far enough fast enough to prove we could do it on our own,” says Christine Crosby, publisher of Grate magazine for grandparents. We now realize how important family is and how important to be near them, especially when you’re raining children.”
Moving is not for everyone. Almost every grandparent wants to be with his or her grandchildren and is willing to make sacrifices, but sometimes it is wiser to say no and visit frequently instead. Self-driving cars have been backed by the hope that they will save lives by getting involved in fewer crashes with fewer injuries and deaths than human-driven cars. But so far, most comparisons between human-driven cars and automated vehicles have been unfair.

Crash statistics for human-driven cars are gathered from all sorts of driving situations, and on all types of roads. However, most of the data on self-driving cars' safety have been recorded often in good weather and on highways, where the most important tasks are staying in the car's own lane and not getting too close to the vehicle ahead. Automated cars are good at those tasks, but so are humans.

It is true that self-driving cars don't get tired, angry, frustrated or drunk. But neither can they yet react to uncertain situations with the same skill or in anticipation of an attentive human driver , nor do they possess the foresight to avoid potential perils. They largely drive from moment to moment, rather than think ahead to possible events literally down the road.

To a self-driving car, a bus full of people might appear quite similar to an uninhabited cornfield. Indeed, deciding what action to take in an emergency is difficult for humans , but drivers will sacrifice themselves for the greater good of others. An automated system's limited understanding of the world means it will almost never evaluate(评估)a situation in the same way as a human would do. And machines can't be programed in advance to handle every imaginable set of events.

Some people may argue that the promise of simply reducing the number of injuries and deaths is enough to support driverless cars. But experience from aviation(航空)shows that as new automated systems are introduced, there is often an increase in the rate of disasters.

Therefore comparisons between humans and automated vehicles have to be performed carefully. To fairly evaluate how well driverless cars fulfill their promise of improved safety, it's important to ensure the data presented actually provide a true comparison. After all, choosing to replace humans with automation has more effects than simply one-for-one exchanging.

    8. What makes the comparisons between self-driving cars and human-driven cars unfair?

    A.Self-driving cars never get tired.

    B.Statistics are collected differently.

    C. Machines can make decisions faster.

D.Self-driving cars know the world better.

9 . What does the underlined word " perils " in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?

    A.Dangers.              B.Self-driving cars.

    C.Pedestrians.            D.Human-driven cars.

10.In which aspect can self-driving cars beat human drivers?

    A. Driving steadily.             B. Climbing steep slopes.

C.Evaluating the cost of loss.     D.Making complex decisions.

    11. Why does the author write this text?

    A.To support human-driven cars.

B.To show his doubts about self-driving cars.

    C. To call for exact evaluation of self-driving cars.

D.To stress the importance of reducing car accidents.

I was in the Santa Cruz Mountains not long ago, speaking and singing at a women's conference. We were focusing on the theme of loving others in practical ways through our gifts, and something in particular happened during one of the sessions will remain imprinted on my memory

A young Syrian woman(Lilith)was invited to the conference at the last minute, and everyone seemed surprised and delighted that she'd actually come. Just a few days earlier,Lilith had fled her country and found refuge with one of the women attending the conference. As an orthodox Christian in Syria, she and her loved ones had become targets for violent terrorist groups in the country's ongoing civil war.

Lilith had witnessed horrors no one of her young age should ever see and decided to leave her home and her family to fi safety here in America. Her story broke my heart.

Lilith's story touched all of us, including Pam, who was a quilt maker. Pam had just finished a beautiful quilt, and had brought it with her. She, along with a few of the leaders, decided to give it to Lilith as a symbol of their comfort and love.

During our last session, Lilith was called forward and prayed for , hugged , and wrapped up in that beautiful quilt .thought of the many hours Pam undoubtedly spent working or it, and the terrible events that led Lilith to this moment-surrounded by beauty and love the quilt embodied. I wept. Wher they told her it was for her, she wept.

12.What is the purpose of the women's conference?

A.To help others in a practical way

B.To win equal rights for women.

C.To get together to dance and sing.

D.To exchange gifts with each other.

13.Why did Lilith go to America?

    A.To attend the women's conference.

    B.To find safety.

    C.To find her family.

    D.To find a better job.

14.From this passage,we know that the writer

    A.enthusiastic

    B.sympathetic

    C.intelligent

    D.talented

15.What is the meaning of the underlined word?

A.A place of interest. B.A place of danger.

    C.A place of trust.

    D.A place of shelter.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给其内容和所给的段落开头语续写成两段,使之构成一个完整的短文

Thanks to my conservative(保守的)family background,I didn't believe in angels(天使).That is,not until Christmas Eve of 1979, when an angel brought unexpected  joy to my home.

After divorce,my two daughters not only lost the safety of a whole family, they also tearfully(泪汪汪地)left behind neighborhood friends, a familiar school, and a large house. These had all been replaced with a narrow two-bedroom apartment in a poorer part of town .

I arranged to take my vacation during my children's winter holiday. We spent evenings planning activities: games, a pizza night , and evening car rides to view neighborhood holiday lights .With expectation , they seemed to be in good spirits .

The week before the school break, however, I was fired because of the company's poor performance. By Christmas Eve,sadness covered our vacation plans. An afternoon outing did little to improve our mood .

On returning to our apartment, we were astonished to see a beautiful,six-foot Christmas tree propped(支撑)against our front door. In silent wonder, we looked back and forth, from the tree to one another and around the empty street. Excitement built, and the girls begged to keep the tree.

"Maybe it's for us,"my older daughter guessed.

"Yeah,"repeated my younger child,"I bet an angel brought it to us!"

I laughed aloud at the idea of an angel bringing a Christmas tree to my family. Caught up in their happiness, I announced the tree "ours".

We moved it inside and headed out to the only upermarkets in our small town open that late on Christmas Eve. With holiday goods down to half price,I agreed to buy a tree stand(底座),two boxes of colorful balls , some colorful lights , and one paper angel.
