Arbeia Roman Fort (城堡) and Museum
    Location and History
Arbeia Roman Fort is situated on Hadrian’s Wall. It was the most important structure built by the Romans in Britain, and now it has been a World Heritage Site. Built around AD 160, Arbeia Roman Fort was the military supply base for the soldiers who were stationed along Hadrian’s Wall. The fort has been gradually uncovered and some original parts have been revealed. There are reconstructions that show how Arbeia Roman Fort would have looked.
    The Reconstructions
The reconstructions of the Commanding Officer’s house and soldiers’ quarters are strikingly different. The accommodation for soldiers is dark and uncomfortable, while the Commanding Officer’s house is spacious and luxurious, with courtyards with fountains for him and his family to enjoy.
    The Museum
Visit the museum and see many objects that were found at Arbeia. They are historically important and show what daily life was really like at that time. You will see weapons, tools, jewellery, and so on. You can also discover how the Romans buried their dead and see tombstones (墓碑) which survive to this day. There is a “hands-on” area allowing visitors to dig on a certain site and study their findings with the help of museum staff. You can piece together pottery (陶器), or try writing just as the Romans would have done. For children, they can build this ancient Roman fort with building blocks by themselves.
    Opening Times and Getting There

Football scarves, shirts and...eggshell art?A retired schoolteacher is making mascot memorabilia(吉祥物纪念品) from eggshell, skillfully crafted by hand.
Nguyen Thanh Tam,67 years old, spends hours every day making the models. He is driven by his soccer enthusiasm shared by millions across Vietnam glued to the World Cup.
The soccer tournament kicked off in Russia a few weeks ago. Most of his tiny statues are of the tournament mascot,a wolf named Zabivaka. The wolf wears big sports glasses and is kicking a soccer ball. Tam also has plans for models of soccer heroes Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Though not widespread in Vietnam, using eggshell in art is not unheard of. Traditional fine works often feature in laid eggshell that is used to replace white paint.
Tam first developed the unique hobby around New Year in 2002. He was looking for the right material to make a statue with his 13yearold students. He discovered that an eggshell perfectly displayed Saint Nick's round belly. He eventually married his passion(酷爱) for crafts and soccer. He started making World Cup mascots during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Now he has about 1,000 of the small statues in his apartment. Some celebrate the 2016 Rio Olympics and the Euro 2016 football tournament in France. Others are of celebrities like Charlie Chaplin,Barack Obama and Gangnam Style's PSY. He also does birds and animals. He has his pigrelated series to mark the Year of the Pig in 2019.
Tam says the biggest challenge is to find the right egg shape to fit the creation,so he has expanded beyond chicken eggs to include ostrich(鸵鸟) and quail(鹌鹑) eggs. He has also widened his egg artworks by using up all the yolks(蛋黄) and whites he used to throw away.
Tam doesn't sell the delicate dolls, preferring instead to keep them on display to impress his visitors. He has already received a nod from Vietnam's record center for the most eggshell art created, but he has a global ambition.“I hope one day my eggshell art will be recognized as a world record,”he said with a smile.
24.What can be learned about Tam's artworks?
A.They're made of eggshell. B.They adopt white paint.
C.They sell well on the market. D.They're partly produced by machine.
25.What's the main purpose of Tam producing the art?
A.To achieve fame and fortune. B.To entertain his students.
C.To make a living. D.To satisfy his passion.
    26.What's Paragraph 6 mainly about?
A.Tam's unique art style. B.Tam's highly accomplished artworks.
C.Tam's achievement in teaching. D.Tam's interest in art collection.
27.What's a great problem for Tam?
A.It's hard to make good use of ostrich eggs. B.It's difficult to find suitable eggshells.
C.It's unbearable to throw away the yolks and whites.
D.It's too hard for his art to be recognized worldwide.

A sleepover (过夜) program, which is designed to make kids believe that their favorite toys enjoy reading, can help encourage children to pick up more books, a new study suggests.
Toys sleepover programs are designed to get children interested in books. Children take their toys to a library for the night. At this point, workers and volunteers take photos of the toys which explore the library and read books. The next day, the children collect their toys and the photos of what the toys did during the night. They are given the books their toys chose to read.
It was found that before the sleepover the children did not spend time looking at the books in their play area at preschool. Immediately after the sleepover, the number of children who read to the toys was higher than the number who did not, but after three days the effect decreased gradually.
The researchers also tested a method for sustaining the effect. They reminded the children of the sleepover a month later, by hiding the toys and showing them the photos again the next day. This simple method brought an increase in the number of children reading to their toys.
The study proves for the first time that children who take part in sleepover programs read picture books to their toys more. “We wanted to know if there really was an effect, and if so, how long it lasts. Surprisingly, not only did the children show interest in the books, but they also began to read to their toys. This means that a new behavior pattern appeared that the children hadn’t had before. We did not expect anything like this,” said one of the researchers.
Reading is important for the development of children’s language skills and imagination. When parents read to their children, it is a passive way of reading for the child. However, when children read to their toys, it is a more active, self-directed way of reading, helping them develop into more active readers, researchers said.
    28. What is the purpose of the sleepover program?
    A. To encourage children to read more. B. To help children to sleep well.
    C. To develop children’s language skills. D. To guide children to form a good sleeping habit.
    29. What do children do in the sleepover program?
    A. Go around the library with their toys. B. Sleep with their toys.
C.Take their toys to the library. D.Read together with their toys.
    30. The underlined word “sustaining” in paragraph 4 can be replaced by______.
    A.showing B. testing
    C. surveying D. keeping
    31. What made the researchers surprised after the study of the sleepover program?
    A. Children showed no interest in the books.
    B. The effect of the sleepover program could last long.
    C. Children began to read to their toys on their own.
    D. Whether the sleepover program had an effect remained unknown.

We’ve all heard of smart phones, but how about smart clothing? The CuteCircuit company has stepped up the technology beat and invented the SoundShirt, which was designed specifically for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. How does this incredible shirt work?
First, let’s talk about a little science. People who have either all or some hearing loss don’t actually listen to music the way that hearing people do, but they can feel it. Sound is made up of vibrations, called sound waves, which hearing people can hear through their ears with the help of the brain. What’s really cool is that deaf people sense vibrations in the part of the brain that others use for hearing!
So how is this remarkable technology able to function? First, CuteCircuit had to figure out a way to send signals to the body, kind of like how you can feel when your phone vibrates in silent mode. Those connections the body can feel are called haptics, a use of technology that simulates the senses of touch and motion. The SoundShirt has tiny sensors woven into the shirt to pick up sound and transfer signals to the brain and body.
To test this music-to-shirt-to-wearer’s brain connection, CuteCircuit set microphones around the stage of a symphony orchestra. The shirt’s computer system digitally received the sounds coming from the instruments. Then the sensors, working like little motors, changed the signals into vibrations and the shirt wearer’s brain did the rest.
The SoundShirt lets people who are deaf or hard of hearing enjoy music in a unique way. The very deep musical sound, or pitch, of instruments like drums and basses vibrates in the lower part of the shirt. Higher pitched sounds from instruments like the flute or violin vibrate higher, around the neck and arms. As the music plays, the sensations combine while the brain gets to work putting together all the different vibrations, allowing the wearer to “hear” the concert.
You might think this innovation (创新) would look like something out of a science fiction movie, but in fact, these shirts are wireless! And the decorative laser-lined design on the shirt looks like an image of sound waves.
Technology’s purpose is to help people and make life better. Think of all the amazing things designers, engineers, and producers of wearable tech will be able to do for humankind.
    32. What’s the passage mainly about?
    A. Deep musical sounds from drums vibrate in the lower part of the SoundShirt.
    B. The SoundShirt lets people who are deaf or hard of hearing enjoy music.
    C. Wearable technology like the SoundShirt is the wave of the future.
    D. CuteCircuit tested the SoundShirt with a symphony orchestra.
    33. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. The SoundShirt is made without any wires.
    B. Deaf people are unable to sense sound vibrations.
    C. The shirt wearer’s brain change sound signals into vibrations.
    D. The sounds from the flute vibrate in the lower part of the SoundShirt.
    34. What can be inferred about the SoundShirt described in the passage?
    A. The SoundShirt works when the wearer is listening to a symphony orchestra.
    B. CuteCircuit is giving away its SoundShirts to those deaf or hard of hearing.
    C. The SoundShirt doesn’t work without the power of the human brain.
    D. Before the SoundShirt, deaf people had no way of feeling sound.
    35. The author probably wrote this passage to ________.
    A. advise that companies should focus on applying wearable technology
    B. advocate that technology can be used to create products that help others
    C. prove that the design of wearable technology is a rewarding industry in future
    D. illustrate that musical instruments can be used to change technology for the better

How to Retain(保存) More of Every Book You Read
In recent years, I have focused on building good reading habits and learned how to read more. For most people, the final goal of reading a nonfiction book is to actually improve their life by learning a new skill, understanding an important problem, or looking at the world in a new way.__36__ With that in mind, I’d like to share three reading comprehension skills that I use to make my reading more productive.
·Make all of your notes searchable.
Having searchable book notes is important for returning to ideas easily.__37__ An idea is only useful if you can find it when you need it.There is no need to leave the task of reading comprehension merely up to your memory.
    ·__38__
When you go to the library, all of the books will be divided into different categories. In the real world, of course, knowledge is not separated into neatly defined boxes._39__ For that reason, I try to consider how the book I’m reading is connected with all of the ideas that are already inside my head.Whenever possible, I try to combine the lessons I’m learning with previous ideas.
·Summarize the book in one paragraph.
__40__ It forces me to review my notes and consider what is really important about the book. In many cases, I find that I can usually get just as much useful information from reading my oneparagraph summary and reviewing my notes as I would if I read the entire book again.
    A.Combine thoughts as you read.
    B.All knowledge is interconnected.
C.Describe the book to your friends.
D.Read widely if you want to practice the skills.
E.It increases the chances that you will apply what you read in real life.
F.Once I finish a book, I challenge myself to summarize the text in just three sentences.
G.It’s important to read books, but it is just as important to remember what you read and use it.

Looked at my work with satisfaction, I couldn’t help imagining how delightedly my grandma would be.

At present, many websites encourage young people to put their information on the Internet, but experts warn that sending private messages to strangers can get one into trouble.
I think sending personal details on the Internet has both advantages and disadvantages. In the first place, sending personal information on the Internet is a good way to introduce oneself. By doing this, you can make more friends. But sending personal details to strangers can cause problems. Some people can take advantage of the details and take you in. Many of such cases have been shown on TV.
In my opinion, we should be careful when we put personal information on the Internet and never give our personal details to strangers.

M: She is scheduled to arrive at 10 pm. But this morning she called me and told me her flight would take off one hour earlier.
W: That’s great. I can’t wait to see her, and then I can ask about her acting skills and the award.
    Text 7
M: If I remember correctly, we’ll have a class meeting this afternoon, won’t we?
W: That’s right. Yesterday the teacher said we would select a new monitor.
M: Who do you think might be the best monitor?
W: I’ve no idea now. But I believe he or she should be ready to help others.
M: Perhaps you’re right. But I think the new monitor should do very well in all subjects.
W: I really can’t agree with you. In fact, very few people can be good at everything.
M: Hey, I don’t mean everything. I only talk about studies.
W: Well, if he or she only cares about studies, I won’t vote for him or her.
M: But it’s so difficult to know whether he or she really likes to help others.
    Text 8
M: Excuse me. Is this the right place where I could add or drop a course?
W: Yes, it is. Fill in the blue form with the name of the course you want to drop.
M: No, I want to add the history course.
W: Sorry, it can’t be added now. You could only add courses one week ago in this term. And last Friday was the last day.
M: But I must add the course, or I won’t get enough credits to graduate.
W: In this case, you have to find the professor and get him to agree to sign the special add form. Then bring it back to me, and I’ll be able to add the course for you.
M: OK. Thanks. I’ll find him as soon as possible.
    Text 9
M: Welcome. Jenny and I have got lots to tell you.
W: That’s right. This week Westfield Radio runs its annual competition. Last year it was to find the best dancer, and next year it will be the turn of local actors to enter. But this year we’re looking for the best singer in our city.
M: And what are the rules?
W: Not many. You need to phone your entry. We don’t accept entries through the Internet or by fax.
M: Right. Well, it’s school holidays this week, so what’s on offer?
W: The sports hall will open an hour earlier than usual at 8:00 am and shut later at 10:30 pm instead of nine. The indoor football ground is always popular and has to be booked in advance.
M: But what about the swimming pool?
W: Not quite such good news, I’m afraid. It will be open about a week later than planned, but good news now—there will be no charge for swimmers for the first week. It’s the same size as the old one, but it is much better equipped.
    M: That’s great.
    Text 10
M: I can’t tell you how many times someone has said to me, “Man, what a cake job! I mean, you only work 4 hours a day!” It’s true that I do a morning program from 6:00 am to 10:00 am, but it isn’t all my work time each day. I get up at 2:00 am then I take a quick shower and sit down at my computer. I collect program information and update our program’s website until 4:30 am. I arrive at the radio station at 5:00 am and spend the next hour preparing, recording and so on. The program begins at 6:00 am and goes until 10:00 am. After that often I can walk out soon, but sometimes there are meetings. Then I go home and answer program e-mails, have lunch and have a short rest. Then at about 4:00 pm, I begin preparing for the next day. It usually lasts two hours. So, the 4-hour-day work timetable is much longer than most people think. Luckily, I really enjoy what I do. It’s not only my work, but also my hobby.
由第一段第三句“…Arbeia Roman Fort was the military supply base for the soldiers…” 故选A项。
由第三段前两句“Visit the museum and see many objects that were found at Arbeia. They are historically important and show what daily life was really like at that time (参观博物馆,看看许多在阿贝亚发现的物体。它们在历史上是重要的,并展示了当时的日常生活是什么样子)”可知,博物馆里展出的物件都是些历史文物。故选A项。
Nguyen Thanh Tam, 67 years old, spends hours...
He is driven by his soccer enthusiasm,第五段第一句和第四句,以及最后一段第一句可知:Tam的蛋壳艺术只是为了满足自己的个人爱好。
根据第一段“A sleepover (过夜) program, which is designed to make kids believe that their favorite toys enjoy reading, can help encourage children to pick up more books, a new study suggests.(一项新的研究表明,一项旨在让孩子们相信他们最喜欢的玩具也喜欢阅读的通宵活动,有助于鼓励孩子们拿起更多的书)”可知,过夜活动的目的在于鼓励孩子们读更多的书。故选A项。
根据第二段“Children take their toys to a library for the night. At this point, workers and volunteers take photos of the toys which explore the library and read books. The next day, the children collect their toys and the photos of what the toys did during the night. They are given the books their toys chose to read.(孩子们把玩具带到图书馆过夜。这时候,工作人员和志愿者拍摄玩具探索图书馆和阅读书籍的照片。第二天,孩子们收集他们的玩具和玩具在晚上做什么的照片。他们会得到玩具选择读的书)”可知,孩子们把玩具带到图书馆,阅读玩具选择读的书。故选C项。
    30. D词义猜测题。根据第四段“The researchers also tested a method for sustaining the effect. They reminded the children of the sleepover a month later, by hiding the toys and showing them the photos again the next day. This simple method brought an increase in the number of children reading to their toys.(研究人员还测试了一种维持这种效果的方法。一个月后,他们把玩具藏起来,第二天再给孩子们看那些照片,以此来提醒他们过夜的事情。这个简单的方法使孩子们对着玩具读书的人数增加了)”可知,研究人员运用给孩子看照片提醒他们过夜的事情,这样可以增加孩子读书的数量,保持过夜活动的效果。由此可知,“sustaining”可替换为“keeping”。故选D项。
    31. C 细节理解题。根据第五段“Surprisingly, not only did the children show interest in the books, but they also began to read to their toys. This means that a new behavior pattern appeared that the children hadn’t had before. We did not expect anything like this(令人惊讶的是,孩子们不仅对书表现出兴趣,而且还开始对着玩具读书。这意味着一种新的行为模式出现了,这是孩子们以前没有过的。我们没想到会发生这样的事情)”可知,孩子们在过夜活动之后对着玩具读书使得研究人员感到惊讶。故选C项。
    D篇 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了CuteCircuit公司为失聪的人或听力障碍者研发的SoundShirt,可以让他们享受到音乐。
    32. B 主旨大意题。根据第一段“The CuteCircuit company has stepped up the technology beat and invented the SoundShirt, which was designed specifically for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.(这家CuteCircuit公司加快了科技步伐,发明了专为失聪的人或听力障碍者设计的SoundShirt)”和第五段“The SoundShirt lets people who are deaf or hard of hearing enjoy music in a unique way.(SoundShirt让失聪的人或听力障碍者以一种独特的方式享受音乐)”,结合全文内容,可知本文介绍了CuteCircuit公司为失聪的人或听力障碍者研发的SoundShirt,可以让他们享受到音乐。故选B。
根据文章倒数第二段“You might think this innovation (创新) would look like something out of a science fiction movie, but in fact, these shirts are wireless!(你可能会认为这个创新看起来像是科幻电影里的东西,但事实上,这些衬衫是无线的!)” 故选A。
根据文章倒数第三段“As the music plays, the sensations combine while the brain gets to work putting together all the different vibrations, allowing the wearer to “hear” the concert.(当音乐响起时,当大脑将所有不同的振动组合在一起时,这种感觉就会结合起来,让佩戴者“听到”音乐会。)”
根据文章最后一段“Technology’s purpose is to help people and make life better. Think of all the amazing things designers, engineers, and producers of wearable tech will be able to do for humankind.(科技的目的是帮助人们,让生活更美好。想想那些可穿戴技术的设计师、工程师和生产商将能为人类做的令人惊叹的事情吧。)”可推断,作者写这篇文章的目的是倡导技术可以用来创造帮助他人的产品。故选B。
